Overview

The kendara is a single-string folk fiddle of eastern India — a coconut shell faced with lizard-skin and a bamboo stick carrying one string. It belongs not to any court but to the village threshold; Natha-sect jogis play it as they wander singing Nirguna bhajans and ballads such as 'Tika Gobinda Chandra' (Kendara Gita). The Santhal community's 'Majhi Kendara' is its tribal form. Its plaintive, humming single string is the voice of that Indian folk soul which finds depth in the minimal.

Physical

Description English

The kendara is an extremely simple, hand-crafted single-string bowed instrument. A coconut shell (or a wooden/gourd bowl) forms the resonating chamber, over which the skin of a godhi (monitor lizard) is stretched; a long bamboo stick joins to it as the neck, carrying a single taut string. It is played by drawing a slender bamboo bow (kamani) across the string. The whole instrument is so light that wandering jogis sling it over a shoulder and roam from village to village.

Strings

A single melody string that carries the entire tune

Count: 1Description Hindi:
Material: Traditionally gut or twisted fibre; commonly nylon fishing-line or thin metal wire in modern instrumentsTuning Example: Tuned by ear to the singer's tonic (Sa); the one string is stopped with the fingers to reach the notes
Tuning Hindi:

The kendara has no sympathetic strings — its resonance comes from the skin membrane, not from resonating wires

Material: N/AInstallation: N/AFunction: N/A

Bow

Kamani (bow)

A curved bamboo stick strung with fibre or horsehair

40-55

Held in the right hand and drawn across the single string; the loose, short bow gives the kendara its characteristic droning, plaintive scrape

Tuning Pegs

Khunti (peg)

A single large wooden peg at the top of the bamboo neck tightens or loosens the lone string to set the pitch

Bridge

Bridge

A small wooden or bamboo bridge rests on the stretched lizard-skin membrane and transmits the string's vibration into the resonator

Wood or bamboo standing on the skin soundboard

Frets

The kendara is fretless — the player slides fingers directly along the bamboo neck to find notes and glides (meend), giving its voice a continuous, weeping-and-singing flow.

Sound

Tonal Character English

The kendara's tone is nasal, plaintive and close to a human cry — a single string droning continuously beneath the jogi's resonant voice. Its sound is felt as mournful, meditative and steeped in devotion.

Timbre

Reedy, buzzing, membrane-warmed drone (the lizard-skin soundboard adds a soft rasp)

Range

Roughly one to one-and-a-half octaves around the singer's tonic

Dynamic Range

Modest — an intimate, doorstep instrument meant to carry a single voice, not to fill a hall

Techniques

Description English: Sliding a finger continuously along the fretless bamboo neck from one note to the next — the kendara's most natural gesture, echoing the singer's vocal glide.
Usage: Follows and shadows the sung line in Kendara Gita and Nirguna bhajans
Description English: Keeping the lone string bowed in a steady, humming continuum over which the narrative song rests.
Usage: The rhythmic-tonal bed of every jogi-gita performance
Description English: Working the short bamboo bow in small, repeated strokes to punctuate the verses and mark the rhythm.
Usage: Interludes between sung couplets of a ballad
Description English: Because the player is also the singer, the string traces the vocal melody note-for-note, so voice and instrument seem to become one.
Usage: Devotional storytelling songs (Nirguna bhajan, Kendara Gita)

The Listening Guide

When you listen to the kendara, do not look for complexity — its power lies in its plainness. Notice how the single string shadows the singer's voice in gliding meend, and how the lizard-skin membrane adds a soft rasp to every stroke. Begin with a Natha jogi's 'Tika Gobinda Chandra' ballad or a Nirguna bhajan — that is where this instrument's heart beats.

Margin Notes

Unlike most bowed instruments, the kendara carries a single string. On that one string the player can accompany hours-long ballads by sliding the fingers — a model of maximum expression from minimal means.

The kendara's rasping, nasal resonance comes from the godhi (monitor lizard) skin stretched over the coconut shell. That membrane converts the string's vibration into sound — as if a tiny drum and a string were fused into one instrument.

Natha jogis traditionally went house to house with a dried gourd in one hand (to collect rice-alms) and the kendara on the shoulder. The begging-songs sung to the kendara are called 'Kendara Gita' or 'Jogi Gita'.

Among the Santhal community of Odisha a special form called 'Majhi Kendara' accompanies their tribal folk songs — the instrument thus bridges the traditions of both the Natha jogis and the Santhal tribes.

Questions & Answers
