The Monographपरिचय Overview

A solo by Noor Mohammad Charlie from Ranjit Movietone's 1941 'Dhandora', composed by Gyan Dutt. The film's nine songs were long unavailable until a handful resurfaced on YouTube; 'Lut Gaya Re' is one of these documented survivors. The lyricist is not individually documented — the film's words were shared between D.N. Madhok and Buta Ram Sharma.
The Poetry

The title 'Lut Gaya Re' draws on one of Hindustani song-poetry's most elastic verbs: 'lutna' — to be plundered, to be robbed. In the ghazal tradition, the beloved's glance is the thief who loots the heart; in the folk song register, 'lut gaya' signals irreversible loss with a shrug rather than a sob. Placed in Charlie's comedy, the word acquires an extra layer: the speaker is someone undone, perhaps by his own scheming, perhaps by love, certainly by the world. D.N. Madhok, who penned seven of the film's nine songs, was a senior Ranjit Movietone house-lyricist with fluency in both Hindustani romantic verse and comic doha-baaz wordplay. His populist style favoured short, punchy mukhras that landed cleanly on a crowd — and 'Lut Gaya Re' as a refrain is exactly that: three syllables of comic resignation that the audience can repeat long after the credits roll.
The Story

Dhandora (1941) was Noor Mohammad Charlie's directorial debut — a rare instance of a comedian also producing and starring in a double role in the same film. Charlie's production for Ranjit Movietone centres on two small-time film extras, Pyare (Charlie) and Mansukh, so hungry for publicity that they concoct a scheme: Mansukh will stage-murder Pyare, get caught, and both names will blaze across newspaper front pages. The comic irony — that the elaborate gambit to be noticed ends in its own undoing — is the spine of the film. 'Lut Gaya Re', translated roughly as 'I've been utterly robbed', suits this comic-lament register: a man who wanted the world's attention and lost something else entirely in the chasing of it. The film's nine songs were composed by Gyan Dutt, with lyrics divided between D.N. Madhok (seven numbers) and Buta Ram Sharma (two), following the standard Ranjit Movietone practice of shared lyric credits. Long unavailable, several songs from the film — including this one — resurfaced on YouTube after decades of obscurity.
The Legacy

Noor Mohammad Charlie's place in Hindi cinema history as the industry's first comedian-hero — a star who at his peak commanded higher fees than Prithviraj Kapoor — lends retrospective interest to everything he touched. Dhandora was unusual in giving Charlie total creative control: producer, director, actor, double role. After Partition in 1947 Charlie shifted to Pakistan, where he continued working until the late 1970s. His Indian work, including this film, fell into obscurity for decades. The rediscovery of Dhandora's songs on YouTube in the digital era restored them to archival circulation, allowing listeners to hear Charlie's characteristic comic-lament vocal style in this early self-directed work.
