The Monographपरिचय Overview

From J. Nakhshab's 1953 film Naghma, starring Nadira and Ashok Kumar, 'Kahe Jaadu Kiya' is a thumri-flavoured folk song sung by Shamshad Begum with music by Nashad (Shaukat Dehlvi) and lyrics by Nakhshab Jaaravchi. The song ranked twelfth on Binaca Geetmala 1953. Nashad's name itself is an interesting story: director-writer Nakhshab had first approached Naushad for the film's music; when Naushad declined, Nakhshab engaged Shaukat Dehlvi and credited him with a name sounding like 'Naushad' — Nashad. Shamshad Begum's characteristically robust, folk-resonant voice was the ideal vessel for this song's earthy charm.
The Music

Nashad (Shaukat Dehlvi, who received this pseudonym for the first time in Naghma) composed in a semi-classical thumri style that suited Shamshad Begum's voice perfectly. The song is in the Khamaj raga family — the raga of playful romantic teasing and semi-classical lightness — and uses the Dadra taal, the six-beat cycle associated with thumri and light classical compositions. Shamshad Begum's powerful, crystalline voice with its characteristic folk directness cuts through any orchestration.
The Poetry

Nakhshab Jaaravchi's lyric is in the playful thumri tradition — the woman addresses her lover directly, accusing him of enchantment. 'Kahe jaadu kiya' (why did you cast your spell?) is both a complaint and a compliment. The Braj-inflected 'kahe' (why) and the intimate 'baalma' (beloved) anchor the lyric in North Indian folk poetics.
The Story

J. Nakhshab — who wrote the story and directed Naghma — is better known as a lyricist. He first approached Naushad for the music; when Naushad turned him down, he hired Shaukat Dehlvi (Ali Sher Mahesar) and gave him the credit name Nashad — almost an anagram of Naushad. This has been described as a mischievous marketing decision. Despite the circumstances, the music succeeded, with this song becoming a Binaca Geetmala top-12 entry.
The Legacy

Shamshad Begum (1919–2013) was one of the most beloved singers of Hindi cinema's Golden Era. Her powerfully robust voice — distinct from the more delicate style of Lata Mangeshkar — made her ideal for folk, thumri and spirited dance songs. This song remains a cherished example of her style and of the robust early-1950s folk-film tradition.
