rich with thy rushing waters, bright with thy orchard fruit,
cool with the sandal winds, dark with the green of thy harvests —
Mother, I bow to thee.
Her nights thrilled with the white moonlight,
her trees radiant in massed flower,
sweet of smile, honeyed of speech,
giver of joy, giver of boons — Mother, I bow to thee.

The Monographपरिचय Overview

“Vande Mataram — at the Kakinada Congress” records the December 1923 episode in which Vishnu Digambar Paluskar sang Bankim Chandra's hymn over the objection of Congress president Maulana Mohammed Ali. A live, unrecorded performance of a public-domain text (Bankim died 1894), it stands at the head of the song's long political afterlife: the 1937 two-stanza compromise and the 1950 national-song adoption.
The Music

Paluskar's life-work was to take classical music out of the salon and into the assembly, and his Vande Mataram embodied it: a tune plain enough for a crowd of thousands, dignified enough for a national ritual. Where Tagore's 1896 setting in Desh was a soloist's art, the Paluskar school's congregational manner made the song a collective act — closer to prayer than performance.
The Poetry

Bankim's Sanskrit-laden Bengali hymn imagines the land as mother — watered, fruited, moonlit, flower-laden. The first two stanzas, all benediction and landscape, are the portion that became the national song; it was the later stanzas' martial goddess imagery that fed four decades of political argument. At Kakinada in 1923 both layers were audible: to Paluskar a darshan of the motherland, to objectors a hymn their faith could not join.
The Story

December 1923, Kakinada: Maulana Mohammed Ali — fresh from prison, the first Khilafat leader to preside over the Congress — objected to the customary opening of Vande Mataram, holding music itself, and this hymn in particular, against his religious conviction. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, who had sung the song at session after session, refused the precedent: the national assembly's song, he held, could not be silenced by any president. He sang; the session heard him out. The episode became the most cited early skirmish in the song's long contested career.
The Legacy

The Kakinada moment previewed everything: the 1937 Congress compromise that retained only the first two stanzas, the Constituent Assembly's 1950 adoption of those stanzas as the national song, and the debates that continue still. It also fixed Paluskar's image as the man who made music a national duty — the same conviction that would send his Ram-dhun marching with Gandhi to Dandi in 1930.
