The Monographपरिचय Overview

“Sitar Recordings — Ustad Inayat Khan” represents the c. 1928 instrumental discs of the Etawah gharana master — Imdad Khan's son and Vilayat Khan's father — Calcutta's reigning sitar voice in the first years of electrical recording.
The Music

Inayat Khan inherited Imdad Khan's gayaki impulse — the sitar made to sing like a voice — and gave it urbane polish: long meends, vocal phrasing, a right hand of conversational subtlety. On disc he mastered the three-minute miniature: a breath of alap, a gat, a controlled blaze of jhala before the groove ran out.
The Poetry

Wordless music, yet built on the same raag grammar as the singers' art — his gats often shadowed famous vocal bandishes, so that listeners hummed words the strings never said.
The Story

Settled in Calcutta where his father had reigned, Inayat Khan was the city's most fashionable instrumentalist — the zamindari salons competed for him, and the Gramophone Company kept him on its rosters season after season. In August 1928 his son Vilayat was born; the boy would carry the Imdadkhani sitar to world fame.
The Legacy

Inayat Khan died young, in 1938, but his discs fixed the Etawah sitar style between the two giants — his father Imdad and his son Vilayat — and shaped how a generation of Bengal heard the instrument.
