“Ramayan Recitation” is a legendary recording from 1899. The voice belongs to Dr. Harnamdas, with lyrics penned by Maharshi Valmiki. Musically it is in the Recitation idiom. Its prevailing mood is devotional, the recording runs 2:38, released on the the gramophone company label.

This is not music in the classical sense, but sacred chanting. Harnamdas employs traditional Vedic intonation patterns to recite verses from the Ramayan. The recording captures the gravity and reverence of epic recitation preserved in an entirely new medium — the gramophone.

The Ramayan is Hinduism's most sacred epic, authoritatively attributed to the sage Valmiki. The choice to record the Ramayan first (before film songs or light classical) reflects the cultural hierarchy of 1899 India.

In March-April 1899, The Gramophone Company sent recording engineers to London's basement studio at 31 Maiden Lane to capture 'Hindustani Records.' Of the 15 Hindu records made, this Ramayan recitation by Dr. Harnamdas stands as the absolute FIRST recording of an Indian human voice ever made. The recording lasted just 2:38 — the maximum length of a gramophone cylinder in 1899.

This recording is India's first claim on recorded sound history. Before Edison's first phonograph recordings could be preserved, before any Indian film was made, before any gramophone was sold in India — Harnamdas's voice was immortalized on wax cylinder by The Gramophone Company in London. This is THE founding document of Indian recorded music. It inaugurated a tradition that would eventually include Gauhar Jaan, Saigal, Rafi, and every singer since.
