प्यारी दुल्हन को दूल्हा जी

A wedding number, named for the two people the whole occasion is about. The honorific ji attached to the bridegroom and the affectionate pyari attached to the bride is the tonal signature of the north Indian wedding song, where the groom is addressed with elaborate mock-respect precisely so that he can be teased under cover of it. Catalogued for Bisvi Sadi with Pannalal Ghosh as composer; no singer or lyricist is named and no lyric text survives.

No recording of the number has surfaced online, so nothing can honestly be said about its scoring beyond who wrote it. What is worth knowing is the hand behind it: in 1945 Pannalal Ghosh was already the leading bansuri player in the country — he had lengthened the instrument to thirty-two inches and added the teevra-madhyam hole to make the lower-octave meend possible — and he came to Bombay film work from New Theatres in Calcutta rather than from the Bombay studio system.

North Indian wedding song is one of the few living traditions in which women's voices hold the floor and men are the material. The banni-banna and gaali forms exist to praise the bride, appraise the groom, mock his family and test his composure, all inside the licence the ceremony grants. A film song titled for 'the dear bride' and 'the bridegroom-sahib' is drawing on that licence; the honorific is the tell, because in this genre respect and ridicule are carried by the same word. What the song did with the setup — whether it stayed festive, turned toward the bride's departure, or served the plot some other way — is not recorded, and the verse has not survived.

Bisvi Sadi — 'The Twentieth Century' — was produced and directed by Mohan Bhavnani for Bhavnani Productions and released in 1945, with Motilal and Nargis heading a cast that also included Mazhar Khan, Gope, Ashalata, Bhudo Advani, Navin and Majumdar. Pannalal Ghosh, the flautist who made the bansuri a Hindustani concert instrument, wrote all fifteen songs; the records went out on Columbia. The wedding song, the Holi song and the two Yamuna-bank numbers together make up more than a third of the score, which suggests a film that kept its ceremonial and village-lyric register very much alive even under a title announcing the modern century.

Bisvi Sadi is out of circulation and no print is known to be accessible, so the song exists today chiefly as a catalogue line in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh–derived databases. Its claim on attention is that it belongs to one of the very few complete Hindi film scores signed by Pannalal Ghosh, whose reputation otherwise rests entirely on the concert platform.
