The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Maalik Mere Maabood' is the second devotional song in Shyam Sundar's score for Bhai Jaan (1945), written by Partau Lakhnavi. As with the film's naat, no source records a singer, and none is credited here. Wikipedia, HindiGeetMala and MySwar all carry the title; the spelling of the second word varies between 'Mabud', 'Mabood' and 'Maabood' across them.
The Music

A munajat — the direct supplication addressed to God — is the slowest and least ornamented form available to a film composer, and the settings of the 1940s generally reflect that: an unhurried tempo, a melody that rises only at the point of address and otherwise stays low, and instrumentation reduced to harmonium and a sustaining bowed line. The restraint is doctrinal as much as musical, since the form does not permit display. Nothing further can be established about this particular setting; no audio transfer of the recording has been located, and the film's own soundtrack is lost with the print.
The Poetry

The title stacks two terms of address: 'maalik', the master or owner, and 'maabood', the one who is worshipped — the passive participle of the same Arabic root that gives ibaadat, worship. Putting them together with the possessive 'mere' turns a theological vocabulary into a personal one, which is exactly the work a munajat does: it takes the most formal available names for God and speaks them as if to someone present. That combination of high diction and intimate address is the defining register of the form in Urdu, and it is why a film could place such a song in a domestic scene without any change of tone. The verses themselves have not survived.
The Story

The prayer belongs to the same layer of Bhai Jaan as the naat: the observant texture that the Muslim social genre offered its audience alongside the melodrama. Filmindia's plot summary is full of occasions on which such a song could sit — the Nawab's illness, the younger brother's operation, the courtesan's final decision — but the review does not say where the songs fell, and the picture itself is gone. What can be said is that a nine-song album with two devotional numbers in it was making a deliberate claim about the world it depicted.
The Legacy

Like the film's naat, this prayer survives only as a catalogue line. It is included here because an encyclopaedia of Hindi film music that records only the songs with famous singers attached would misrepresent what a 1945 soundtrack actually contained — two of the nine numbers in Bhai Jaan were devotional, and leaving them out would make the album look more secular than it was.

No print of Bhai Jaan (1945) is known to survive. The film is counted among the lost Hindi productions of the 1940s, so its song titles and Filmindia's November 1945 synopsis and review are effectively all that remain of it.

All nine lyrics in the film were written by Partau Lakhnavi, who is credited in the Filmindia production panel simply as 'Partao Lucknavi' under 'Dialogues & Songs' — the picture's writing team of Chughtai and Khalil handling story and dialogue.
