Amar Movietone's Intaqam (1933) — 'Revenge' — combined the action-drama narrative of revenge with the romantic-melodic content that talkie audiences demanded. Director-actor J. K. Nanda, trained in Germany, brought technical sophistication to the production. Songs featuring Sultana and Nurjahan (the Bombay actress of the 1930s) would have balanced the dramatic intensity of the revenge plot with lyrical romantic passages — the formula that defined the early talkie action-drama genre.
