The Monographपरिचय Overview

This devotional address to the Almighty — 'aleem' (all-knowing), 'jabbar' (the compeller), 'kareem' (the generous) — is among the seven songs of the Fazli Brothers' Muslim social drama Ismat (1944). Sung by Rajkumari to lyrics by Shams Lakhnavi, it reflects the film's devotional register and was the last of the picture's songs to be documented in modern catalogues. The melody bears the imprint of composer Pandit Govardhan Prasad, a court musician of Jaipur for whom Ismat was the only film assignment of his life.
The Music

Govardhan Prasad, a Dhrupad vocalist and Kathak dancer trained in the Jaipur royal court and a guru of Khemchand Prakash, brought a grave, raga-leaning classicism to the tune — a devotional weight that set Ismat's score apart from the lighter film fare of 1944.
