The comic record was its own craft. With no stage business to lean on, everything had to live in the voice: sudden register changes, mock-grand alaaps that collapse into patter, snatches of popular stage tunes bent out of shape. Peara Saheb — a trained ghazal and dadra singer — could parody the classical manner precisely because he commanded it.
