The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Ajab Hai Kudrat Ki Maya' is a Manna Dey solo in Shankarrao Vyas's Vikramaditya score, written by Ramesh Gupta. It belongs to the standing 1940s category of the philosophical film song — the number in which a character, or an onlooker, steps out of the plot to comment on how the world works. Both Hindi Geetmala and the Wikipedia song table list it; no recording is in circulation and no contemporary description of its use in the film survives.
The Music

The philosophical song had a well-understood musical shape by 1945: slow tempo, a low tessitura so the words sit close to speech, long held notes at the end of each line to let a thought settle, and minimal rhythmic drive — often nothing more than a soft dholak or a sustained harmonium. Manna Dey's voice, dark in the lower register and trained to hold a note without vibrato tricks, was well suited to it, and composers would use him this way for the rest of his career. The actual scoring for this number is undocumented.
The Poetry

The title is worth reading closely because of the two words at its centre. 'Kudrat' is Perso-Arabic — nature understood as divine power, what the creator has made. 'Maya' is Sanskrit — the world understood as illusion, appearance that conceals reality. Putting them in one line is not carelessness; it is exactly the composite register of North Indian film Hindi, where a lyricist could reach for the Urdu word for creation and the Vedantic word for its unreality in the same breath and be understood by everyone in the hall. What the title asserts — that the play of creation is strange — is the standing premise of the whole genre. Beyond the title, nothing of the text survives in any accessible source, and no lyrics are reproduced here.
The Story

Vikramaditya's plot gives such a song plenty to work with: a princess who loses a kingdom overnight, a poet raised from the road to a court appointment, a minister who turns a city against an innocent woman, and a king whose fortunes rise and fall inside a single reign. Vijay Bhatt made the film for the Vikram Bimillennium Committee and worked, by his own account, from history rather than legend — but the philosophical song was one place where a historical could speak directly to a 1945 audience living through the last years of colonial rule and the aftermath of the Bengal famine.
The Legacy

No recording, no chart placing, no later cover: this song exists today only as an entry in two song registers. Its one durable use is as an example of how much of a mid-1940s soundtrack was made of standing forms — the aarti, the acclamation, the sky song, the philosophical number — assembled to a pattern that every studio understood, and of which most individual instances have simply been lost.

The film's song register credits Manna Dey with six of its ten numbers — an unusually large share for a singer barely three years past his 1942 playback debut in Tamanna, and more than a decade before the songs that made his name.

Vikramaditya was made at the request of the Vikram Bimillennium Committee, which was marking two thousand years of the Vikram Samvat calendar — one of the very few Hindi films of the 1940s commissioned by a public body rather than initiated by a studio.
