The address is unusual and worth noting: the song does not speak to a beloved or a deity but to duniya, the world, and does so with the feminine vocative 'ae ri' and the intimate particle 'ri' — the grammar of speaking to a woman friend or a familiar equal. Personifying the world as an obstinate companion who must finally be talked round is a device with roots in bhakti and folk poetry, and it gives the line a tone of exasperated intimacy rather than complaint.
