The Monographपरिचय Overview

The title asks a question rather than making a statement: who is this nirala — this singular, unlike-anyone person — who has come into the garden? It is the classic Braj-poetry entrance, in which the beloved is announced not by name but by the disturbance he causes in a familiar place. HindiGeetMala and MySwar both list the song for Bisvi Sadi with Pannalal Ghosh as composer and no singer or lyricist credit; the lyric itself is not preserved.
The Music

No recording of the number has surfaced online, so nothing can honestly be said about its scoring beyond who wrote it. What is worth knowing is the hand behind it: in 1945 Pannalal Ghosh was already the leading bansuri player in the country — he had lengthened the instrument to thirty-two inches and added the teevra-madhyam hole to make the lower-octave meend possible — and he came to Bombay film work from New Theatres in Calcutta rather than from the Bombay studio system.
The Poetry

Bagiya — the little garden, the diminutive of bagh — is not neutral ground in Hindi verse. It is where the Braj gopis meet Krishna, where spring is registered before it is announced, and where a woman may be alone without being improper. Putting a stranger into that space is the whole event of the song: the garden is hers, and the question 'who has come' carries both alarm and delight in the same breath. The word nirala does a second thing — it does not mean handsome or noble but unlike-any-other, which in this tradition is the word reserved for the divine visitor as much as for the human one. Two other songs in the same score are set on the banks of the Yamuna, so the film's lyricist, whoever he was, clearly had the Braj landscape available and used it more than once.
The Story

Bisvi Sadi — 'The Twentieth Century' — was produced and directed by Mohan Bhavnani for Bhavnani Productions and released in 1945, with Motilal and Nargis heading a cast that also included Mazhar Khan, Gope, Ashalata, Bhudo Advani, Navin and Majumdar. Pannalal Ghosh, the flautist who made the bansuri a Hindustani concert instrument, wrote all fifteen songs; the records went out on Columbia. Two catalogue sources transliterate the title slightly differently — 'Aaya Hai Bagiya Me Kaun Nirala' on HindiGeetMala and 'Aaya Hai Bagiya Mein Kaun Nirala' on MySwar — and both refer to the same single recording.
The Legacy

Bisvi Sadi is out of circulation and no print is known to be accessible, so the song exists today chiefly as a catalogue line in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh–derived databases. Its claim on attention is that it belongs to one of the very few complete Hindi film scores signed by Pannalal Ghosh, whose reputation otherwise rests entirely on the concert platform.

Margin Notes'

The Bisvi Sadi score carries three songs rooted in Braj imagery — this garden song and two set on the banks of the Yamuna — in a film whose title, 'The Twentieth Century', points in exactly the opposite direction.
