Overview

At two minutes fifty-six seconds this is the briefest of Ghulami's nine recordings, and one of only two on which Bharat Vyas sings his own words — here in duet with Renuka Devi. The title is an invocation addressed not to a temple deity by name but to 'the God of the Gita', which locates the song squarely in the reformist devotional register that Hindi cinema used when it wanted piety without sectarian specificity. S. K. Pal recorded it twice for the same film: this duet, and a separate version for Renuka Devi with chorus.

The Music

Recording the same song twice — once as a duet, once for the leading lady with chorus — was standard practice on 1940s soundtracks when a devotional number had to appear at two different points in a film, typically once as private prayer and once as a communal one. The duet is the shorter and tighter of the two at 2:56 against 3:26, which suggests it is the intimate rendering. Pal's setting is built for words to stay legible: a bhajan in a film has to be sung clearly enough to be followed on first hearing.

The Poetry

Bharat Vyas's devotional writing works by calling rather than describing — the verb is an imperative, 'come', and the addressee is defined by a text rather than an idol. That choice matters in a 1945 film: 'the God of the Gita' is a formulation that a nationally mixed audience could accept, and it belongs to the same reform-minded Hindi vocabulary that Vyas would carry into his later work. Nothing in the recording is quoted here; the theme is a plea for divine presence in a situation the singer cannot resolve alone.

The Story

Ghulami was a Shalimar Pictures release directed by Mohan Wadhwani, with Renuka Devi and Masood Parvez leading and Bharat Vyas in support. Vyas's presence in the cast is what makes this duet possible at all: he is singing on screen as an actor, not as a playback voice for someone else, which was still a normal arrangement in 1945 even as playback was taking over. Renuka Devi — Begum Khurshid Mirza — sings on eight of the album's nine tracks, and this is one of two where a male co-singer is Vyas rather than Masood Parvez. The film's plot is undocumented.

The Legacy

The song survives because the album survives: HMV/Saregama kept the Ghulami masters, and the digital reissue carries both versions of this number in sequence, which is itself a small piece of evidence about how the film used it. Beyond the album it has had no separate life. Its interest is as an early record of Bharat Vyas the singer — a role he mostly gave up as his writing career expanded — and as a clean example of the two-version devotional convention that 1940s Hindi cinema used constantly and that later decades largely abandoned.
