The titti is South India's own indigenous bagpipe — an air-sack sewn from a whole goat-skin, with a bamboo blowpipe in one leg and a double reed in the other. Its role is not melody but holding the unbroken 'sruti' — the steady tonic on which the storytellers, folk singers and dance-dramas of Andhra and Karnataka villages build their art. In Tamil Nadu the same instrument is called the 'sruti upanga'.
ClassificationNatya Shastra Category
(Sushira - wind instruments)
Among the four instrument classes of the Natya Shastra (Tata, Sushira, Avanaddha, Ghana), the titti belongs to Sushira — instruments blown with air. It is specifically a reservoir (bag) aerophone: air stored in a whole goat-skin is pushed continuously across a double reed to sound an unbroken 'sruti' (the tonic drone).

Description English
The titti is not carved from a single body but sewn from an entire goat-skin turned into an airtight sack. The four leg-openings of the animal become the instrument's sockets — a bamboo blowpipe is fixed into one leg, a double-reed sounding pipe (chanter) into another, and the remaining openings are tied off tight. The player squeezes the bag under the arm to keep a reservoir of air, so the note never breaks even while the player pauses to breathe.
Bag
Bag (skin reservoir)
Whole hide of a goat, sewn and sealed airtight
Cured / tanned goat-skin (sometimes lamb or kid skin)
Air reservoir that stores breath and, under steady arm pressure, delivers an unbroken stream of air to the reed — the mechanical secret behind the continuous drone
Roughly the span of a small goat's hide; carried under the arm (approximate — dimensions vary by maker)
Blowpipe
Blowpipe
Short bamboo or reed tube fitted into one leg-socket
The player blows through it to refill the bag; a simple flap/valve or the tongue keeps air from escaping back out
Chanter Reed
Chanter with double reed
A short pipe holding a double reed (two blades of cane/palm-leaf that beat together), inserted into the opposite leg-socket
The vibrating double reed is the actual sound source, sounded continuously by the air from the bag
In some variants the chanter carries a few finger-holes for a simple folk melody; in the commonest form it sounds a single sustained drone pitch
Drone And Tuning
Drone (sruti) and tuning
The titti's main duty is to hold an unbroken tonic (sruti). The reed is tuned to the singer's or lead player's 'Sa' with a pellet of wax, a thread binding, or by lightly trimming the reed.
Decoration
In folk practice the bag and pipes are sometimes dressed up with coloured thread, woollen tassels, or cloth wrapping.
Frets
This is not a stringed instrument, so it has no frets. Pitch is set by the reed's construction and, where present, by finger-holes on the chanter.
Tonal Character English
The titti's sound is nasal, buzzing and reedy — carrying far across fairgrounds and open ground. Its great virtue is continuity: once the note is set it flows on unbroken, like a single sustained human 'aa' held forever.
Timbre
Reedy, nasal, buzzing drone with a bright cutting edge (from the double reed); rich in upper harmonics
Range
Essentially a single sustained drone pitch (the tonic, sometimes with its fifth or octave); melodic variants with finger-holes cover roughly an octave of a folk scale
Dynamic Range
Loud and steady — built for open-air folk performance without amplification; dynamics controlled by arm pressure on the bag
Techniques

When you listen to the titti, don't hunt for a tune — listen for the stillness. Notice how the unbroken sruti running underneath holds the whole folk performance together, like the ground of a painting. Amid the singing, drumming or dancing above it, that buzzing tonic is the real foundation. Choose open-air recordings, where its far-carrying hum is heard in its true setting.

The word 'titti' is used for this instrument in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam alike. The same is called 'sruti upanga' in Tamil Nadu and the related 'mashak/masak' in the north — a whole family of skin-bag bagpipes with different names across India.
The most astonishing thing about the titti is its construction: a whole goat-skin is turned into an airtight bag, and the animal's legs themselves become the pipe-sockets. No strings, no large wooden body — just skin, bamboo and a double reed.
Today every classical singer takes the tonic from an electronic sruti box. Before that electric box arrived, in South Indian temple ensembles the same unbroken drone came from a living, breathing instrument — the sruti upanga / titti.
The bag-and-reed bagpipe idea sprang up independently around the world. The titti is India's proof of it — South India's own indigenous bagpipe, laying the sonic ground of village fairs for centuries.
Questions & Answers
