The surnai is the loud cry of the Kashmir valley — an eighteen-inch conical wooden pipe with seven finger holes and a double reed, whose sharp voice fills an entire open ground without any amplification. This Indian member of the surna/zurna family joins the dhol and nagara to become the heartbeat of Bhand Pather folk theatre, and sounds the note of auspiciousness at every wedding procession and festival.

(Sushira - wind instruments)
In the Sushira (wind) category of the Natya Shastra, the surnai is an air-column instrument that produces sound by the vibration of a column of air. Its conical bore and double reed place it in the same 'shawm' family as the shehnai and nadaswaram.

Description English
The surnai is an approximately eighteen-inch (~45 cm) conical wooden pipe with seven finger holes on the front and a flared bell mouth at the end. A double reed fixed at the top is pressed between the lips and blown. Louder, rawer and more open-air-piercing than its refined cousin the shehnai, it is the lead melody instrument of Kashmir's Bhand Pather folk theatre and of wedding (baraat) processions.
Body
Straight conical pipe widening into a flared bell
Seasoned hardwood — traditionally walnut, apricot, mulberry or other fruit-tree wood of the Kashmir valley
40-48
The conical bore itself is the resonator; the widening bell projects and amplifies the tone for open-air performance
Strings
The surnai is a stringless wind instrument — it has no strings; sound is produced by the double reed and the vibrating air column.
Not applicable — the surnai is an aerophone, not a chordophone
Reed
Double reed
दोहरा रीड (double reed)
Two thin blades of cut and shaved cane/reed bound together, sometimes seated on a small metal staple (bocal)
The double reed is the soul of the surnai — pressed between the lips and blown with high pressure, it yields the instrument's sharp, penetrating cry. Many players use a small lip-disc (pirouette) to rest the lips against for sustained blowing.
Finger Holes
7 (front), sometimes with an additional thumb hole
Pitch is changed by opening and closing the seven finger holes; half-holing and finger shading allow meend (glides) and microtonal shadings.
Bell
Bell mouth
The flared open end (often reinforced or capped with brass/metal) that radiates and amplifies the sound outward
Wood, frequently ringed or belled with brass/metal
Frets
The surnai has no frets — as a wind instrument, pitch is governed by finger-hole covering and breath pressure.
Tonal Character English
The surnai's tone is loud, sharp and piercing — powerful enough to carry across an entire village or open ground without any amplification. It carries festivity, valour and the theatrical exuberance of folk drama; in plaintive melodies it can sound like the very call of the valley.
Timbre
Bright, reedy, buzzing and penetrating (characteristic double-reed 'nasal' brilliance)
Range
Roughly two octaves, dictated by the seven finger holes and overblowing
Dynamic Range
Predominantly loud and forceful — designed for open-air projection rather than intimate soft playing

Listen to the surnai with an open mind and open ears — it is not an intimate instrument but an instrument of the open ground. First hear its trio with dhol and nagara, and watch how the three together build a theatrical scene. Then focus on a solo surnai's long, unbroken phrase — that is the marvel of circular breathing. Listen alongside a Bhand Pather episode, where the surnai's tone shifts at every turn of the drama.

Surnai (Kashmir), sorna/surna (Iran) and zurna (Turkey and Central Asia) are all regional names of the same shawm instrument. This is why searching 'Surnai' on English Wikipedia redirects to the 'Zurna' page.
The shawm family to which the surnai belongs is the same family that, on reaching Europe, became the ancestor of the modern oboe. In other words, the Kashmiri surnai and the Western orchestra's oboe are distant cousins.
Bhand Pather is traditionally staged in the open, with no sound system. The surnai's piercing voice is the very 'microphone' that carries the story to spectators sitting far away.
Questions & Answers
