Overview

The Padayani thappu is the principal rhythm instrument of Kerala's Bhagavati ritual art 'Padayani' — a single-headed frame drum of buffalo hide over a jackfruit-wood hoop, tuned by warming it over an open flame before play. The massed 'thappu melam' of dozens of drums sets the temple courtyard pulsing and drives the masked kolam dancers toward frenzy.

(Avanaddha - membranophones / drums)

In the fourfold instrument classification of the Natya Shastra, the thappu belongs to the 'Avanaddha' (skin-covered / membranophone) category — a single-headed frame drum whose sound is produced by striking a stretched hide membrane.

Physical

Description English

The thappu is a small, circular frame drum whose shell is usually made from the wood of the jackfruit tree, over which buffalo or ox hide is stretched. Only one face is closed (single-headed); the other remains open. The hoop is roughly 10–12 inches in diameter and the instrument is light, so it can be slung and played standing, held against the body.

Body

Shallow circular hoop (single-headed frame drum)

Jackfruit (panasa) wood shell (traditional)

10-12

Shallow rim — a few inches deep, unlike the barrel-shaped chenda

Open-backed shallow frame; the single stretched head radiates the sound directly

Membrane

Hide head

Buffalo or ox hide, glued/laced onto the wooden hoop

Single-headed (only one face is covered)

To tighten the head and set its pitch, the drum is warmed over an open flame for a long while, then brushed with special leaves and allowed to cool. This heating ritual gives the thappu its sharp, full ring.

Strap

Sling strap

A cloth or rope strap slung over the shoulder or held so the drum hangs against the player's chest for standing, marching-style performance

Sticks

Beater sticks (kol)

The thappu may be played with two thin wooden sticks — one hand striking the accents, the other filling the weave of the rhythm — or with the bare palm.

Frets

The thappu is a rhythm instrument and therefore has no frets or pitched stops; its entire vocabulary lies in stroke, tempo and gait, not in melody.

Sound

Tonal Character English

The thappu's sound is low, earthy and physically insistent — distinct from Kerala's classical temple percussion (chenda melam), more grounded and primal. The stick on the fire-tightened head yields a sharp cracking snap and a deep thud together, driving the kolam dances of Padayani toward trance.

Timbre

Dry, sharp attack over a low, resonant thud; slightly buzzing when the head is fully heated

Range

Non-melodic — a single struck pitch with wide dynamic and timbral shading (rim vs. centre, palm vs. stick)

Dynamic Range

Very wide — from a soft ritual pulse to a thunderous massed roll of many drums (thappu melam) that carries across a temple courtyard without amplification

The Listening Guide

To follow the thappu melam, attend to its collectivity — not a single drum but the layered, interlocking rhythm of dozens. Hear how the aashaan (master) sets a pattern and the rest lift it; how the beat climbs from the slow champa to the climactic speed of marma, and the kolam dancer's frenzy with it. In the night temple courtyard, by torchlight and masks, it is a communal, trance-like experience.

Margin Notes

The thappu is among the rare instruments 'tuned' by directly heating it over fire before play. Heat shrinks and tightens the hide so the pitch rises and sharpens; even mid-performance the players return the drum to the flame.

In Padayani each 'kolam' (masked figure — Bhairavi, Kalan, Yakshi, Ganapati and others) has its own rhythmic pattern. This rhythmic dialogue between the thappu players and the dancer is what gradually carries the dancer into a state of possession and trance.

In Kerala, where the barrel-shaped chenda is the grand voice of classical temple melam, the shallow, circular thappu is the earthy pulse of folk ritual. The two sometimes play together to form different rhythmic ensembles (melam), yet their temperaments are wholly different.

In devotional and ritual contexts the thappu is usually accompanied by the 'elathalam' (thick, small bronze cymbals), which give the rhythm a clear edge and shimmer.

Questions & Answers
