The ghumot is a pot-drum shaped from Goa's clay, open at both ends — the wide mouth headed with skin (once monitor-lizard, now goat) and the narrow rear mouth left open, which the player covers and releases to make the drum 'speak'. Born in the potter's hands, it sounds from temple Ghumat aarti to the Mando, Dekhni and Suvari vadan, threading Hindu and Catholic traditions into a single pulse. In 2019 Goa declared it a 'heritage instrument'.

Among the four Natya Shastra instrument families, the ghumot belongs to the 'Avanaddha' (membrane-covered percussion) category — instruments whose mouth is stretched with hide. The ghumot is a single-headed earthen-pot drum whose wide mouth is headed with skin while the opposite mouth stays open.

Description English
The ghumot is a clay pot-shaped percussion instrument open at both ends — one mouth wide, the other narrow. The wide mouth is traditionally headed with the skin of the ghorpad (monitor lizard) — and today goat skin — while the narrow rear mouth remains open to control air and modulate pitch. The pot is thrown by local potters from clay; some temples also use copper or brass ghumots.
Body
Asymmetric earthen pot — bulbous, tapering to a narrow open rear mouth
Fired terracotta clay (traditional); copper or brass in some Bicholim-region temples
30-45 (approximate; varies by potter and region)
The hollow clay belly acts as the resonating chamber; the open rear mouth lets the player 'tune' the boom by covering or releasing it
Strings
Not applicable — the ghumot is a membrane drum, not a stringed instrument
None — the ghumot has no sympathetic strings
None — pitch depth comes from the clay body's resonance, not from drone strings
Membrane
Hide head
Monitor-lizard (ghorpad) skin
Goat skin (monitor lizard is now a protected species)
The hide is soaked overnight, stretched over the wide mouth, and lashed on with coir rope and banana-plant fibre, then dried in the shade
Bow
—
None (played with bare hands)
—
—
The ghumot is struck directly with the bare right hand; no bow or stick is used
Tuning Pegs
—
None
There are no tuning pegs; head tension is set once when the hide is lashed on, and momentary pitch is shaped live by the rear-hand opening
Bridge
—
None
No bridge — vibration passes directly from the struck hide into the clay resonating chamber
—
Frets
The ghumot has no frets — it is a percussion instrument; pitch depth and the characteristic 'wah' come from covering and releasing the open rear mouth with the palm.
Tonal Character English
The ghumot's voice is deep, resonant and earthy-warm — a 'boom' that is choked when the rear mouth is covered and opens out when it is released. This opening-and-closing resonance gives the ghumot its distinctive speaking tone and the rolling pulse of devotional aarti.
Timbre
Warm, round, clay-resonant; a low booming fundamental with a soft 'wah' when the rear mouth is worked
Range
Low to mid; a fixed-tension drum with limited pitch range but expressive dynamic and timbral variation
Dynamic Range
Moderate to strong — from a soft palm tap to a full-bodied festival boom that carries over group singing without amplification

To understand the ghumot, first hear a 'Ghumat aarti' — notice how one pot swings between an open boom and a damped thud, and how the pulse 'breathes' as the rear mouth opens and closes. Then listen to a Mando, where the same ghumot holds the slow song-dance. Follow its interplay with the shamel and kasale — together the three make a living swing.

The ghumot is among the rare Goan instruments that live equally in the Hindu temple aarti and the Catholic Mando and Dekhni. This shared presence makes it a living emblem of Goa's composite culture.
The ghumot's body is thrown not by an instrument-maker but by the village potter — so each ghumot's voice depends on its clay, thickness and firing. In a sense, every ghumot is unique.
A ban on monitor-lizard (ghorpad) skin under wildlife law threatened the ghumot's very survival. The answer came in goat skin — saving both the tradition and the law. This was a key debate around the instrument's heritage recognition.
Competitions like the 'Ghumat Mahasangam' held in Goa see college troupes present Ghumat aarti on big stages — keeping this ancient instrument enthusiastically alive among the young.
Questions & Answers
