The bana is the three-string bowed fiddle of Central India's Gond Adivasis and their bard-priests, the Pardhans — a hollow wooden 'pur' faced with white-goat skin, three horsehair strings (of 30-40-50 hairs), and a bow called the 'hathwa'. It is not merely an instrument but a deity in itself — the moment it sounds, Bada Dev awakens. Its three-note system (tinggi-madhwa-dhodha) lies outside the classical raga framework, one of India's most ancient tribal tonal visions.

तत (Tata - stringed instruments)
The bana belongs to the Tata (stringed) category of the Natya Shastra — a friction-activated instrument sounded by drawing a bow (the 'hathwa') across horsehair strings. Yet it stands outside the classical raga system, rooted instead in the Gond Adivasi's own three-note tonal tradition.

Description English
The bana is a handmade three-string bowed instrument, crafted by the Pardhan player himself. Its central section is hollowed and carved from wood — called the 'pur' — over which a membrane of white-goat skin, the goat sacrificed to Bada Dev, is stretched. The strings are made of horsehair, the tuning pegs of bamboo, and the bow is called the 'hathwa'. Every bana is carved with its clan's totem symbol (monitor lizard, tortoise, tiger, cobra).
Body
Long stick/spike body with a carved hollow central resonator (the 'pur')
Solid carved wood for the body and pur; membrane of white-goat skin (sacrificed to Bada Dev) stretched over the resonator
approx 60-90 (handmade, varies by maker and clan)
Hollow wooden 'pur' faced with a stretched goat-skin membrane that projects the bowed sound — the skin head gives the bana its dry, voice-like buzz rather than the metallic shimmer of a sarangi
Strings
Three playing strings, each tuned to one of the three Gond notes
The bana has no sympathetic (tarab) strings — unlike the sarangi, its resonance comes from the skin membrane, not resonating wires
No separate drone strings; the three horsehair strings themselves carry the entire three-note melody-and-rhythm of the Gond bardic tradition
Bow
Hathwa
Wooden/bamboo stick strung with fibre or horsehair
approx 40-60 (handmade)
Drawn across the three horsehair strings to sound the notes while the bard sings the epic; short, speech-like strokes punctuate the sung narrative rather than sustained classical bowing
Tuning Pegs
Bamboo pegs / wooden tuning knobs
Bamboo tuning pegs with wooden tuning knobs adjust the tension of the three horsehair strings
Bridge

Bridge
A small bridge seated on the goat-skin membrane transmits the horsehair strings' vibration into the skin head and hollow pur

Frets
The bana is fretless — the player stops the horsehair strings directly with the fingers to produce the three notes (tinggi, madhwa, dhodha), allowing a speech-like, sliding inflection that hugs the bard's sung words.
Tonal Character English
The bana's sound is dry, buzzing, and close to human speech — not the bright wail of the sarangi but a rough, earthy, incantatory tone. The skin membrane and horsehair strings together produce a voice that seems to speak alongside the sung epic, and is believed to awaken the deity.
Timbre
Rough, nasal, membrane-buzzed drone-and-melody — grainy rather than glossy
Range
Narrow — essentially three tones (tinggi/madhwa/dhodha) plus their sliding inflections, matching the sung recitation rather than a wide classical compass
Dynamic Range
Moderate; tuned to carry a solo bard's voice across a village courtyard or shrine, not to project over an ensemble

To understand the bana, listen to it not as 'melodious music' but as narration. Notice how the strings speak just behind the singer's voice. The wonder lies in how long a saga the bard weaves within a world of only three notes. Feel the rough hum of the skin membrane — this is not the music of the stage but of the shrine.

The bana is a rare instance in Gond tradition where the instrument itself is worshipped. It is kept in the household shrine 'moodh ragh', and when played, Bada Dev awakens and manifests through possession upon the player or a devotee.
The membrane stretched over the bana's resonator 'pur' is no ordinary skin — it is the hide of a white goat sacrificed to Bada Dev. This is what makes it ritually sacred.
Unlike classical music's seven notes, the Gond tradition recognises only three — tinggi (sharp), madhwa (middle) and dhodha (low). The bana's three strings are the embodiment of this three-note philosophy.
Every third year the Pardhan bard would travel to his Gond patron families, play the bana beneath the Saja tree to invoke Bada Dev and recite the epics. His visit was held to bring blessings, for he was an emissary of the local deity.
Questions & Answers
