Dalsukh Pancholi's Lahore studio returned to the musical social drama that had made Khazanchi (1941) famous, this time with Noor Jehan in the female lead — the young singer-actress from Punjab who would within the decade become the Mallika-e-Tarannum (Queen of Melody). Ghulam Haider composed again, and the results — particularly 'Tu Kaunsi Badli Mein' — produced some of the most beloved songs of early Noor Jehan's recorded output. The film belongs to the Lahore Punjabi-social-drama genre that the Pancholi studio had effectively invented with Heer Ranjha (1932).

Ghulam Haider's second landmark Pancholi soundtrack — after Khazanchi — demonstrates his refinement: the percussion-forward Punjabi arrangements remain but are now deployed with greater formal sophistication. The romantic songs have a new tenderness; the folk-influenced pieces a new scale. D.N. Madhok's lyrics suit both registers, his Hindustani-Punjabi blend effortless.

Behind the Scenes

Shaukat Hussain Rizvi, who later married Noor Jehan and produced her greatest post-Partition films in Pakistan, was already working closely with her in Lahore cinema by 1942. This production is where their professional collaboration — and eventually personal relationship — was cemented.
Significance

Khandan is the film in which Noor Jehan announced herself as the pre-eminent female voice of Lahore cinema. Her voice — warm, full, with extraordinary control of the melismatic turns that Punjabi folk singing demands — was perfectly matched to Ghulam Haider's rhythmically alive compositions. Together they created a sound that would dominate Pakistani film music after Partition.
Legacy

Khandan is a foundational text of the Lahore-Punjabi-cinema tradition. Noor Jehan's songs from this film remained in circulation in Pakistan for decades. Ghulam Haider's work here, alongside Khazanchi, confirms him as the architect of the Punjabi-inflected popular music that dominated Subcontinental commercial cinema from 1941 through at least 1955.
