The Monographजीवनी Biography

Sushila Rani Patel was a classical vocalist, playback and screen singer, actress and journalist whose brief film career belied a remarkably wide-ranging life. Trained in the Jaipur-Atrauli tradition under Mogubai Kurdikar and later with Sundarabai Jadhav, she began recording for His Master's Voice in 1942, cutting well-received classical and non-film discs. Hired as a sub-editor at filmindia magazine by its famed editor Baburao Patel, she was launched by him in the title role of the mythological Draupadi (1944), opposite Mazhar Khan, singing all of the film's raga-based songs composed by Hanuman Prasad. She followed it with Gwalan (1946) opposite Trilok Kapoor, singing six solos and two duets under Hansraj Behl's baton. Neither film succeeded commercially, and after marrying Baburao Patel she withdrew from the screen, devoting herself to Hindustani classical music while helping run filmindia and its successor Mother India. In 1961 the couple founded Shiv Sangeetanjali, a school to nurture classical music talent; her students included flautists Ronu Majumdar and Nityanand Haldipur. A woman of restless accomplishment, she also earned law degrees in her sixties and practised homeopathy. Her contribution to Hindustani music was recognised with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2002. She died in 2014, aged 95.
