The Monographजीवनी Biography

Pransukh Nayak (full name Pransukh Manilal Nayak; 23 April 1910 – 12 March 1989) was primarily known as a Gujarati theatre actor, director, manager, and playwright from Jagudan in present-day Mehsana district, Gujarat. Inspired by the celebrated female impersonator Jaishankar Sundari, he joined theatre troupes as a child and became renowned for his comic roles and female impersonations, working with companies including the Mumbai Gujarati Natak Mandali, Prabhat Kalamandal, and Natmandal. Over his career he is recorded to have given 22,455 stage performances, a total listed in the 1989 Guinness Book of Records, and he later founded his own Pran Theatre to stage educational plays for schoolchildren. He also wrote eight plays, including Balotiyana Balela and Balbhakta Prahalad, and received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1974.
Alongside his stage career, Nayak composed the film music for Do Diwane (1936, also known as Be Kharab Jan), a Hindi/Gujarati bilingual comedy produced by Sagar Movietone and directed by Chimanlal Luhar, based on a play by K. M. Munshi, with lyrics by Raghunath Brahmbhatt. He also had an on-screen role as a royal astrologer in the later Gujarati film Bhavni Bhavai. He died of cancer in Ahmedabad on 12 March 1989.
