The Monographजीवनी Biography

Eddie Billimoria (1900 – 18 February 1981) was a leading man of early Hindi cinema, active from the silent era through 1953. Born in the cantonment town of Kirkee near Poona, he entered films almost by accident — after years spent as a cinema projectionist, a director mistook him for his actor brother Dinshaw Billimoria and put him in front of the camera, leading to a small part in Punjab Mail (1929). He went on to appear in roughly 300 films. At Chandulal Shah's Ranjit Studios he became a regular leading man opposite Madhuri and Gohar Mamajiwala through the mid-1930s, starring in the mythological Veer Babruvahan (1934) and the socials/costume dramas Kashmeera, Toofan Mail, Sitamgar and Tara Sundari (all 1934) — the last directed by Chandulal Shah himself. He is credited alongside the song listings of these films in some archival databases, but according to Cinemaazi's profile of him, he never actually sang or danced on screen in any of his roughly 300 films, despite the song-heavy nature of 1930s Ranjit productions; he was valued instead for his versatility in stunt and action sequences. His other Ranjit films include Baghdad Ka Badmash (1932) and Toofani Taruni (1934). He later had a brief spell at Kikubhai Desai's Paramount Studios before settling into character roles for the remainder of his career.
