The Monographजीवनी Biography

Ajoy Bhattacharya (6 July 1906 – 24 December 1943) was a Bengali poet, lyricist, playwright and film director, credited with writing more than two thousand songs across his career and ranking among the most prolific lyricists of Calcutta's New Theatres studio through the 1930s and early 1940s. Born in Shyamgram in the Tippera region of Bengal (present-day Comilla District, Bangladesh), he studied at Ishwar Pathshala in Comilla before earning an M.A. in Bengali from Calcutta University in 1929, and began publishing poetry in journals such as Dhoomketu, influenced by Kazi Nazrul Islam.
He made his film debut as lyricist on Dhirendranath Ganguly's Bidrohi (1935) and went on to write for numerous New Theatres productions — including Adhikar, Shapmukti, Nimai Sannyas and Mahakavi Kalidasa — working closely with the studio's house composers, among them Pankaj Mullick, R. C. Boral and Timir Baran, as well as S. D. Burman. His songs for Adhikar (Bengali 1938 / Hindi 1939), directed by Pramathesh Barua, are among his best remembered, including "Barkha Ki Raat Aaiye" (sung by Pankaj Mullick) and "Suhaag Ki Raat Aaiye Sajni" (set to the same tune, sung by Pahari Sanyal). Like several New Theatres lyricists, he wrote for both the Bengali and Hindustani versions the studio produced simultaneously from the same films.
He also directed two films, Ashok and Chhadmabeshi, the latter released in 1944, after his death in December 1943 at the age of 37. Beyond cinema, he was a published poet, novelist and translator.
