A bandish is a short (typically 2-4 line) fixed composition consisting of both lyrics (bol) and melody set to a specific raag and taal. In a khayal performance, the bandish is the 'theme' from which the musician develops extensive improvisations. The bandish provides: (1) a melodic anchor, (2) a lyrical foundation (usually simple, sometimes even nonsensical in meaning), and (3) rhythmic structure through its taal. The performer returns to the bandish periodically throughout the performance to 'reset' and refocus the audience's attention. A good bandish is memorable, musically coherent, and provides enough material for extensive improvisation. Bandishes are traditionally composed by master musicians and are often attributed to specific composers or gharanas (musical lineages). Learning bandishes is a core part of classical music training.
व्युत्पत्ति Etymology
From Hindi-Sanskrit 'bandh' (बंध), meaning 'to bind,' 'to tie,' or 'to compose.' A bandish is a 'bound' or 'fixed' composition, as opposed to the free improvisation (alap) that surrounds it.
