History
Odeon — the Berlin label of the International Talking Machine Co. — was founded in 1903 and pioneered the double-sided disc. Its expeditions reached India from 1906, bringing German competition to the Gramophone Company's near-monopoly; by the early 1910s Odeon's Indian catalogue ran to hundreds of classical, light-classical and theatre recordings. The First World War broke the German labels' Indian trade; Odeon was later absorbed into the Carl Lindström group and ultimately EMI. The Odeon name returned on Indian film-music discs in the 1930s.
