Talash-E-Haq (Search for Truth) is a social drama in which the tawa'if-turned-producer Jaddan Bai takes command of the entire musical and dramatic apparatus. The film is historically remarkable as the debut of Nargis — the future star of Awaara and Mother India — who appears as a child artist in the production produced by her own mother Jaddan Bai. The plot deals with themes of truth and justice in a social framework. Jaddan Bai's double role as actress and music director gave her singular creative control, reflecting the entrepreneurial power of some tawa'if-lineage artists in early Indian cinema.
Music composed and directed by Jaddan Bai — one of the earliest female music directors in Indian cinema. Individual song titles not fully documented. Classical Hindustani and thumri influences from Jaddan Bai's training in the Banaras tradition.
Notable on two counts: the film debut of Nargis (Fatima Rashid, aged five or six), who would grow up to be one of Hindi cinema's greatest stars; and Jaddan Bai's role as music director, making her among the first women to compose for Hindi talkies. The Sangeet Film Co. was founded and run by Jaddan Bai herself, a rare example of female entrepreneurship in 1930s Indian cinema.
