The panghat — the steps at a village well or river where women go to draw water — is the single most productive setting in the north Indian love lyric, and this song puts the speaker's heart there. Its title survives in two catalogues and its recording on Saregama's reissue, but no singer credit does, and the lyricist is recorded only as part of the film's three-name block.

Kamal Dasgupta's Meghdoot score keeps to light-classical textures throughout, and a panghat song in that setting would be expected to lean on a folk-inflected melodic turn without acquiring the dholak-and-chorus treatment a Bombay composer of 1945 would very likely have given it.

The panghat is where the village's private lives become briefly public — where glances are exchanged, pots are broken, and the walk home takes longer than it should. Transplanting that emphatically folk, emphatically local setting into a film adapted from a Sanskrit court poem is the kind of blending Hindi cinema did constantly in the 1940s, and it is one of the few places in this score where the material stops sounding courtly. One caution: transliterated as 'gile', the word could read either as gīle (wet) or gile (complaints, as in gila-shikwa) — the wet-steps reading fits the panghat image better, but the catalogues preserve only the Roman spelling, so the ambiguity is real.

Meghdoot was Debaki Bose's adaptation of Kalidasa's Meghadutam for Kirti Pictures, released in October 1945 with Shahu Modak and Leela Desai in the leads. Kamal Dasgupta — a composer who spent almost his whole career inside HMV's Calcutta studio rather than in Bombay — wrote the eleven documented songs, and the film's three credited lyricists, Faiyyaz Hashmi, Gauddas and Pandit Narottam Vyas, are listed together at film level in the catalogues rather than song by song.

Nothing in the surviving record suggests the song travelled beyond the film. It is preserved on Saregama's 2017 digital reissue, which for Meghdoot is the whole of its afterlife: the film has no circulating print, and the soundtrack is now the only part of it anyone can actually experience.
