पानी में खेले जवानी

'Pani Mein Khele Jawani' is one of the nine Roopbani-Damodar Sharma songs from Alladin (1945). Alone among the nine titles it names a physical setting rather than an emotion — water play, the bathing or fountain scene that costume fantasies used as their standard set-piece for a group of young women. It is one of the songs that hindigeetmala.net carries but that some secondary song-census lists of 1945 omit, and no singer credit for it survives.

No recording is accessible and the music cannot be described from the title. Contextually, water and dance set-pieces in 1940s fantasy films were nearly always chorus-led, with a repeating refrain sung by a group and short solo interjections between — a construction that let a director shoot as much or as little of the sequence as his budget allowed. Damodar Sharma composed for that constraint for most of his career.

The line yokes jawani — youth as physical bloom — to the verb khelna, to play, and sets both in water, which in Hindi-Urdu song imagery carries an unusually wide load: it is at once purification, sensuality, abundance and the memory of village life at the well or the river. Placing youth at play in water is therefore not a neutral description but a compressed set of associations that a 1945 audience would have unpacked instantly. Roopbani used the same simple, concrete diction here that he reserved for the film's lighter numbers, in deliberate contrast with the Urdu abstractions of 'Kaun Hamara Hai Nigahban' elsewhere in the same score.

Alladin was one of a very large number of Hindi films released in 1945; the industry was at a wartime peak in output, with a proliferation of small companies of which Mohan Pictures was one. Nanubhai Vakil directed, working in the Arabian Nights material he had been remaking since the silent era. The film's genre classification in the standard 1945 listing is Costume Fantasy, and the songs were divided between spectacle numbers such as this one and the Urdu-idiom reflective songs elsewhere on the soundtrack.

There is no documented afterlife. The song is preserved as a title in the hindigeetmala.net and MySwar catalogues and nowhere else; its singer, its recording and its picturisation are all lost. Recording it accurately — including recording what is missing — is the only form of preservation now available to it.
