The Monographपरिचय Overview

Hindi Geetmala and the Wikipedia song table both list 'Om Jai Jai Shankar' twice for Vikramaditya (1945): once for the mixed group of Amirbai Karnataki, G. M. Durrani and Manna Dey, and once as this Manna Dey solo. Ramesh Gupta wrote the words and Shankarrao Vyas the music for both. Double-pressing a devotional number in group and solo form was ordinary 78-rpm practice, and the solo version is usually the one built for repeat listening at home rather than for the sequence on screen.
The Music

Stripping an aarti down to one voice changes what the melody has to do. The group version can lean on volume and the answering chorus; the solo has to hold the same refrain with nothing but line-shape and breath, which is precisely the kind of demand that got Manna Dey hired. He had trained under his uncle K. C. Dey and then in Hindustani classical music under Ustad Dabir Khan and Ustad Aman Ali Khan, and composers used him from the start for material that needed clean intonation and steady, unhurried phrasing rather than star colour. What the arrangement actually sounded like is not recorded anywhere available.
The Poetry

The lyric is the same invocation as the group version: Om, the acclamation jai, and Shankar, the benign name of Shiva. Sung by one voice it reads differently — an aarti in chorus is a community act, while an aarti alone is a private one, and Hindi cinema has always used the difference deliberately, giving the solo form to a character in isolation or in crisis. Whether Vikramaditya used it that way cannot be established: no print of the film is in general access and no contemporary description of the sequence survives. The words themselves are withheld here in full, as they are for every song on this soundtrack.
The Story

This is one of six titles Manna Dey sings in Vikramaditya, which is a striking share for 1945: he had made his playback debut only three years earlier, in Tamanna (1942), and was still known in Bombay mainly as K. C. Dey's nephew and assistant. Vyas, who had scored Prakash Pictures' Ram Rajya (1943) and Bharat Milap (1942), evidently trusted him with the film's devotional weight. The picture itself — Vijay Bhatt's commissioned historical about the king of Avanti, with Prithviraj Kapoor in the title role — was the studio's follow-up to Ram Rajya, its biggest hit.
The Legacy

No recording of this solo has been traced, and it is absent from every Manna Dey compilation and retrospective that circulates. Its value is as evidence rather than as music: it belongs to the long stretch of the 1940s in which Manna Dey worked steadily without a signature hit, singing bhajans and background numbers for mythologicals and historicals, before 'Upar Gagan Vishal' and then the 1950s work with Raj Kapoor's films began to make his name. Vikramaditya is one of the larger, and less remembered, entries in that stretch.

The film's song register credits Manna Dey with six of its ten numbers — an unusually large share for a singer barely three years past his 1942 playback debut in Tamanna, and more than a decade before the songs that made his name.

Composer Shankarrao Vyas (1898–1956) trained from the age of eleven under Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, founded music schools in Ahmedabad and Bombay, and scored roughly thirty-two Hindi films between 1937 and 1954, most of them mythological or devotional subjects.

Vikramaditya was Prakash Pictures' follow-up to Ram Rajya (1943) — the third highest-grossing Indian release of its year, the only film Mahatma Gandhi is said to have watched, and the first Indian picture to premiere in the United States — with the same director, Vijay Bhatt, and the same composer, Shankarrao Vyas.
