Overview

The only lyric on the Mai Kya Karun soundtrack by Rammurti Chaturvedi rather than D. N. Madhok, and one of the film's two dance numbers. It is an advice song — take our word for it — cast in plainly rustic Hindi. The collector who catalogued the recording read it, from the diction alone, as two women exchanging notes with each other, probably while dancing, and said as much while asking readers for anything better. No print of the film is known to survive, so the song exists only as audio and its picturisation is nowhere documented. Catalogues disagree about the singers: HindiGeetMala credits Hamida Banu alone, the collector index credits a Rajkumari–Hamida Banu duet. Both are credited here and the conflict is flagged.

The Music

Nothing is documented about the arrangement, so the honest description is of the type rather than the take: a mid-forties dance number written for two women sat on a firm, danceable rhythm with a repeating refrain the choreographer could build formations on, and it needed to be legible on a gramophone side to listeners who would never see the dance. Rajkumari, if she is on the record, was by 1945 one of the most heavily worked voices in Bombay, with a bright, penetrating tone very unlike Hamida Banu's classically weighted delivery — a contrast the period liked in duets. Ninu Majumdar was a classically schooled composer — a son of the silent-film producer Nagendra Mazumdar and a pupil of Ustad Faiyaz Khan — who described his aim in film music as bringing a classical touch to it by borrowing from the old masters.

The Poetry

Rammurti Chaturvedi was a working lyricist of the mid-1940s credited on well over a hundred and fifty songs, often sharing screen credit with co-writers, and his registers ran to exactly this kind of plain village Hindi. The title's grammar is the interesting part: mano hamari is imperative and collective at once — take our word, not mine — so the speaker is a pair or a group rather than an individual, which is what makes the song advice rather than confession. Hindi film had a standing use for the form: a chorus of women telling a younger one, or each other, how things stand, in an idiom old enough to sound like received wisdom even when it had been written that month.

The Story

Mai Kya Karun was made at Flora Films, Bombay, directed by Sudhir Sen, and turns on a childhood marriage that two quarrelling fathers annulled in practice but never in fact: the grown children meet years later as strangers, the heroine (Suraiya) holding back because she has been raised to believe she is a child widow. Mai Kya Karun gave two numbers to voices outside the story's leading pair, and its newspaper advertisement billed a dance director as 'Prof. More' in type bolder than that used for the supporting actors; the collector who reproduced that advertisement identifies him as K. S. More (also spelled Moray or Morey), the dance director who married Cuckoo — and Cuckoo herself appears in the same advertisement's cast list, billed as 'Kukoo'. Neither of the two singers credited on this record appears in the film's cast, so the number was sung in playback rather than by the actresses themselves; who appeared on screen is not recorded. The cataloguer went no further than to say that the rustic lyric suggests two women exchanging notes, ‘perhaps while dancing’, and asked readers for anything better. This was the seventh of the film's eight songs to be documented by collectors, in December 2024 — eight decades after the recording.

The Legacy

The song has no independent afterlife. Its documentary interest is that it is the sole Rammurti Chaturvedi credit on an album otherwise entirely by D. N. Madhok — the kind of single outside lyric that mid-forties productions commonly commissioned for a dance number, and a small piece of evidence about how such work was divided. No collector appears to have written about the recording until December 2024.

Margin Notes

No print of Mai Kya Karun is known to be in circulation, and no source consulted states the film's archival status either way. What is documented is that the collectors who catalogued the soundtrack had only the audio of each side, including this one, and that none of the picturisations is recorded.

Singer credit for this song is disputed. HindiGeetMala lists Hamida Banu alone; the collector blog Atul's Song A Day, working from the recording, lists it as a Rajkumari-Hamida Banu duet. Both are credited on this page.

This is the only song of the film's eight not written by D. N. Madhok, who supplied the other seven lyrics.

The song was the seventh of the eight to be documented by collectors, in December 2024 — the last, 'Mai Gulgoon Hai Jawani Hai', followed in May 2025, completing the album's catalogue eighty years after it was recorded.
