The Monographपरिचय Overview

MySwar lists 'Nange Badan Vastra Bin Phirate' first among the ten songs of Aarti (1945); HindiGeetMala carries it too, and neither records a singer. Music is credited jointly to Ashok Ghosh and Ali Baksh, and no lyricist is recorded for the film. The title states its subject without metaphor: people going about with bare bodies for want of cloth. Cloth was not a neutral image in India in 1945 — khadi had been the central symbol of the nationalist movement for two decades, and wartime shortages had made cloth scarce and dear. A film song built on the absence of it was making an argument, and it is the clearest single indication of why the trade catalogued Aarti as a 'Social'.
The Music

No recording is in circulation and no description of the number survives, so nothing is entered here for melody, tempo, raag or instrumentation. The composers are Ashok Ghosh and Ali Baksh, credited together on every song of the film with no division recorded. Ghosh's contemporary credits — Chhoti Bahu / Sanskar (1940), Radhika (1941), Nirdosh (1941), Sharafat (1943), Miss Devi (1944), Gunjan (1948) — establish a working composer of the National Studios and Sagar circuit rather than a stylistic signature that could be extrapolated onto this song, since almost none of that output is audible today either.
The Poetry

The line is written in plain Hindi rather than in Urdu or Braj — vastra, badan, phirate — which matters, because the diction is the argument. Where the film's romantic songs use the ornamented registers of Urdu ghazal and Braj shringar, this one drops to the vocabulary of ordinary speech and reportage, and the effect is to present the image as fact rather than as figure. The verb phirate, to wander or go about, carries no destination: these are people in continuous motion with nowhere to arrive. Because the film's lyricist is unrecorded and no recording survives, nothing past the opening can be read, but the choice of register in the title alone locates the song in the reformist tradition that ran from the Progressive Writers' Association into 1940s Hindi cinema.
The Story

Wikipedia's list of Hindi films of 1945 classifies Aarti as a 'Social', and this song is the strongest surviving evidence for that classification. The film was directed by Ramchandra Thakur for Screen Attractions Corporation, with Surendra and Vanmala leading a cast that included Hansa Wadkar, Sheikh Mukhtar, Kanhaiyalal, Ansari and Harish. Kanhaiyalal, who would become one of Hindi cinema's defining character actors, was exactly the kind of performer such a song was written around in this period — but no source records who sang or performed it, and no plot summary of the film survives to place it in the narrative.
The Legacy

The song survives only as a title in two song indexes. No recording is available on any platform, and no history of 1940s Hindi film music discusses it. Its interest now is documentary: it shows that in the last two years before Independence, a modest Bombay production was putting a song about people with no clothes on their backs into a commercial soundtrack alongside love duets — and that this entire strand of the period's output disappeared more completely than the hits did, leaving the decade's surviving playlist skewed heavily towards romance.

Kanhaiyalal, listed in Aarti's cast, entered films as a writer and lyricist before becoming one of Hindi cinema's great character actors; he was born in Varanasi in 1910, the son of Pandit Bhairodutt Choube, and died in 1982.

MySwar's ordering places this song first in Aarti's track list while HindiGeetMala orders the film's songs alphabetically; the two catalogues therefore give no reliable indication of the songs' sequence in the film itself.
