Overview

Dhamki contains two songs built on the same figure, and this is the second of them: where 'Aankh Mila Ke Koi Re' proposes the exchange of glances, this one deals with what happens after. The singer's position is that eyes once met cannot then be averted — the look has already created an obligation. Zeenat Begum sings it, as she does most of the film's nine songs.

The Music

The 'ankhiyan' of the title is the folk-Hindi plural rather than the Urdu 'aankhein', and Amarnath's setting follows the word: this is the rustic, lightly swung side of his writing rather than the ghazal side heard elsewhere in the score. The repetition of the word across the line gives the melody its built-in hook, an economy the Punjab School composers used constantly and which suited a form that had to establish itself in the first eight bars of a shellac side.

The Poetry

Averting the eyes — ankhiyan churana, literally to steal one's eyes away — is a fixed idiom of north Indian love poetry, and it carries an accusation of bad faith that the English 'looking away' does not. To steal your eyes back is to take back something already given. Madhok therefore builds the whole lyric out of a single verb pairing, mila ke and na churana, and lets the grammar carry the argument: the second act is illegitimate because of the first. Read alongside the film's other eye-meeting song, the two form a small two-part sequence on the ethics of a glance.

The Story

Dhamki (1945) was a suspense thriller made at Dalsukh M. Pancholi's Lahore studio, Pancholi Art Pictures, and directed by Ravindra Dave — Pancholi's nephew, who had joined the studio at fourteen as a production manager and was here working close to his first solo directorial credits. Ragini, born Shamshad Begum and a star since her 1940 Punjabi debut Dulla Bhatti, led the cast opposite Al Nasir, with Smriti Biswas, Kalavati, M. Ismail and a young Om Prakash in support. The Wikipedia record of 1945 Hindi releases classes the film as thriller noir; no detailed plot summary of it survives in accessible sources.

The Legacy

Dhamki is not part of the living Hindi film song repertoire — no print of the film circulates and its records are collectors' items rather than radio staples. Its lasting interest is documentary. Pandit Amarnath was dead by 1947 — the music of that year's Mirza Sahiban is credited to 'Late Pandit Amarnath' — so this is among the last complete scores he finished, and the composer who had discovered Zeenat Begum around 1937, when she was still a child, gave her the largest share of it. Within eighteen months of the film's release, Partition had scattered everyone involved across a new border.

Margin Notes

Zeenat Begum was born at Malerkotla into a family of musicians and was discovered by Pandit Amarnath around 1937, when she was still a child; the Dhamki songs she sings are the work of a composer recording a singer he had found himself.

Director Ravindra Dave was Dalsukh M. Pancholi's nephew and had joined the Lahore studio at the age of fourteen as a production manager; after Partition he moved to Bombay and built a career on exactly this kind of suspense picture.

Four independent sources — the Hindi Film Geet Kosh database, hindigeetmala, myswar and the Pakistan Film Magazine archive — agree on nine songs for Dhamki, all composed by Pandit Amarnath to lyrics by D. N. Madhok. They do not agree on every singer: the Geet Kosh gives Zeenat Begum five of the nine, Munawar Sultana three and Amirbai Karnataki one, while the Pakistani and myswar listings give Zeenat Begum six.
