मेरे मन में है मन का चोर

One of the five Kul Kalank songs for which the catalogues record a composer and a lyricist but no singer, and for which no recording has been traced. The title is a small piece of wordplay that Hindi devotional and film lyric have both used for centuries: the thief who has stolen the heart turns out to live inside the heart, so the accusation and the confession are the same sentence. Without a recording, that title is nearly all that survives of the song.

The recording is lost and no description of it exists, so nothing can be said about the setting beyond the conditions every song in this score shared: a three-minute 78-rpm side cut in Bombay in 1945, composed by Allah Rakha under his film name A. R. Qureshi, and arranged for the modest ensemble a studio of Sunrise Pictures' size could afford. The composer's surviving film work is rhythm-led and melodically unfussy; that is the only reliable guide to how a light interior song of this kind would have been treated in his hands.

The 'man ka chor' — the thief of the mind, or the thief that the mind itself is — is one of the most portable phrases in north Indian poetry, moving freely between Krishna-bhakti, where the thief is God, and film romance, where he is a lover, and satire, where he is one's own weakness. Roopbani's line keeps all three doors open by placing the thief inside rather than outside: nothing has been taken from the singer by anyone else. In a film built around a family's fear of exposure, a song about the accusation one makes against oneself is doing more work than its light surface admits.

Kul Kalank was produced by Sunrise Pictures and directed by Nanubhai B. Vakil, with music by Allah Rakha and lyrics by Roopbani throughout. Eleven songs were recorded; five of them, including this one, come down to us with no singer attached. That gap is normal for smaller 1945 productions: the Hindi Film Geet Kosh compilers worked from surviving record labels and studio publicity, and where a side was never issued or the label is lost, the singer's name goes with it.

The song has no afterlife. It did not enter the Saregama catalogue, no recording circulates, and no writing on 1945 mentions it. It is recorded here as part of the film's complete documented soundtrack rather than for any claim about its quality or reception — an honest listing of what the film contained, with the singer field left empty because the singer is genuinely unknown.
