Overview

The film's second dance number and its most frankly decorative song: a fast duet by Rajkumari and Hamida Banu, D. N. Madhok's lyric, staged — according to the one collector who has written about it — as a bar dance. The title puts two of the oldest words in Urdu-Persian pleasure poetry side by side: mai-e-gulgoon, rose-coloured wine, and jawani, youth. No print of the film is known to survive, so the song exists only as audio and its picturisation is nowhere documented. It was the last of the film's eight recordings to be documented, in May 2025, completing the album's catalogue eight decades after it was made.

The Music

What is documented is the function rather than the notes: a bar-dance number in a 1945 social was a fast, strongly-pulsed piece with a refrain built for repetition, written so that a choreographer could stage entries and exits on it and so that it would still work as a self-contained record for buyers who never saw the film. Putting two voices on it — Rajkumari's bright, cutting tone against Hamida Banu's heavier, classically trained one — gives the number the call-and-answer shape such staging wants. Ninu Majumdar was a classically schooled composer — a son of the silent-film producer Nagendra Mazumdar and a pupil of Ustad Faiyaz Khan — who described his aim in film music as bringing a classical touch to it by borrowing from the old masters. The dances were arranged by Prof. K. S. More.

The Poetry

Mai-e-gulgoon is a set phrase of Persian and Urdu verse — literally rose-coloured wine — and it arrives in Hindi film lyric already carrying centuries of the saqi-nama tradition, where wine, youth and the passing of the hour are the same subject seen three ways. Madhok simply juxtaposes the two nouns in the title and leaves the listener to draw the conclusion the tradition has always drawn: both are here now, and neither will keep. Placed in a film about a young woman who believes her own youth has been cancelled before it began, the sentiment is not merely decorative, though with the picturisation undocumented there is no way to show that the film intended the echo.

The Story

Mai Kya Karun was made at Flora Films, Bombay, directed by Sudhir Sen, and turns on a childhood marriage that two quarrelling fathers annulled in practice but never in fact: the grown children meet years later as strangers, the heroine (Suraiya) holding back because she has been raised to believe she is a child widow. Mai Kya Karun gave two numbers to voices outside the story's leading pair, and its newspaper advertisement billed a dance director as 'Prof. More' in type bolder than that used for the supporting actors; the collector who reproduced that advertisement identifies him as K. S. More (also spelled Moray or Morey), the dance director who married Cuckoo — and Cuckoo herself appears in the same advertisement's cast list, billed as 'Kukoo'. Neither Rajkumari nor Hamida Banu is in the film's cast, so the number was sung in playback for someone else on screen; the advertisement's cast list includes the dancer Cuckoo, though no source records who performed this particular number. The collector's account of the film, drawn from its publicity material, is also the source for the plot summary used across this catalogue entry and for the release date of 12 July 1946 — a year later than the 1945 production year under which the film is normally listed.

The Legacy

The song's only claim on posterity is a curious one: it is the point at which the Mai Kya Karun soundtrack was finally completed in the public record. The collector blog that had been working through the film since 2013 posted this number in May 2025 as the eighth and last, marking the album as fully covered. For a Flora Films production whose print is not known to be in circulation and whose only traced contemporary notice is a single Filmindia review of October 1946, that eighty-year gap between a bar-dance record and the first written account of it is a fair measure of how thin the documentation of 1940s Hindi film music still is.

Margin Notes

No print of Mai Kya Karun is known to be in circulation, and no source consulted states the film's archival status either way. What is documented is that the collectors who catalogued the soundtrack had only the audio of each side, including this one, and that none of the picturisations is recorded.

This was the eighth and final song of Mai Kya Karun to be documented by collectors, in May 2025 — a little over eighty years after the recording was made.

The film's dances were arranged by Prof. K. S. More, who around this period married the dancer Cuckoo, shortly before she became the most sought-after specialty dancer in Hindi cinema.

Catalogues transliterate the title as 'May Gulgun Hai Jawani Hai'; the collector index gives 'Mai gulgoon hai jawaanee hai'. Both render the Urdu phrase mai-e-gulgoon, rose-coloured wine.
