The Monographपरिचय Overview

'Jawani Pe Rang' is one of the twelve songs G. A. Chishti wrote for Albeli (1945) and, like the rest, is catalogued without a singer or a lyricist. The title phrase - colour upon youth - belongs to a large family of 1940s film lyrics that treat rang as something that comes over a person at a particular age, half a metaphor for desire and half a literal reference to the colours of spring. No recording has been located and no further text survives, so the entry here is a record of the title and of the film it belonged to, not an account of a song anyone has heard recently.
The Music

Nothing survives to describe. Within Chishti's practice a celebratory number of this kind would have sat on a dholak pattern with the beat well forward, a melody in a bright, open register, and a refrain designed for a chorus or for the audience to carry out of the hall - the same economy of means he used everywhere in this score, where the arrangement never does more than the words need.
The Poetry

Rang in Hindi film lyric is rarely just colour. It carries the sense of a mood taking hold, of a season arriving, and of intoxication, and a line that puts rang on jawani is placing all three on a young body at once. Songs built this way were usually staged as a group number or a festival scene, because the image wants more than one person on screen to work. That is as far as the surviving fragment allows one to go; the rest of the line is gone, and the Geet Kosh does not say who wrote it.
The Story

Albeli (1945) was made by Talwar Productions of Calcutta and directed by the company's proprietor R. C. Talwar, who also wrote the story; J. S. Casshyap supplied the screenplay and dialogue. Shooting began in Lahore and was completed in Calcutta, and the picture opened at the Central Cinema in Bombay on 22 December 1945. The plot follows a street girl in love with a gypsy boy who is wanted by two other young women as well; Ramola headed a cast that included the actor-singer Satish, Rooplekha, Manorama, Usha, Sunder and Hiralal. G. A. Chishti composed all twelve songs, and Baburao Patel's filmindia gave the film a hostile notice in its March 1946 issue.
The Legacy

Albeli produced no hit and its songs did not travel, so this title has no reception history to record. It is worth keeping for the balance it gives the score: alongside two hawker cries, a song of social grievance and at least two love duets, Albeli also had a celebratory number, which tells us the film was built to the standard commercial template of its year even if the finished picture failed to persuade either audiences or filmindia's reviewer.
