'Choti Si Kahani' is the quietest title on Bachpan's song list and the one that folds back onto the film: a small story, told small, inside a film called Childhood whose plot is precisely a small story about a child who keeps being moved from one household to another. I. C. Kapoor wrote the film's story and its lyrics both, which makes the title a kind of signature. S. N. Tripathi composed it. No singer was credited and no recording is known to survive.

Nothing about the setting of this song was written down. What is known is the composer — S. N. Tripathi, Bhatkhande-trained, four years into independent work in 1945 — and the medium, a single shellac side of roughly three minutes, which is the only formal constraint that can be stated with confidence. No disc transfer has surfaced, and the surviving catalogues record composer and lyricist and nothing else: no raag, no taal, no tempo, no indication of how many voices sang it.

The phrase choti si kahani carries a built-in modesty that Hindi uses deliberately — calling something a small story is a way of asking for a hearing without claiming importance, and it is also how adults introduce a story to a child. In a film whose whole argument is that an unimportant child rearranges an important man's life, the phrase has more weight than it admits to. Whether I. C. Kapoor's lyric took that direction is not established; only the title is documented, and no text has been located.

Bachpan was made by Homi Wadia's Basant Pictures, a studio then known for Fearless Nadia stunt pictures, and it is a social family drama instead: Bhairav (Mazhar Khan), embittered and living alone on a mountainside after his son married outside their caste, is slowly softened by Madhu (Baby Madhuri), the young niece a relative sends to live with him. Madhu is twice abducted — once by the aunt, who sells her as a companion to the wealthy invalid Kamla (Baby Shakuntala), and once by Kamla's jealous governess — and the film ends with the village schoolteacher Ramesh (B. Nandrekar) and his beloved (Chandraprabha) clearing Bhairav's name at the police station. I. C. Kapoor wrote the story, the dialogue and all ten song lyrics; S. N. Tripathi composed the score.

No transfer of the recording is known and the song was never reissued; it survives as an entry in the film's song list. Its interest is structural rather than musical — it shows a lyricist who was also the screenwriter naming a song after the register of his own film, which is the kind of small internal rhyme that gets lost when only the hit songs from a year are remembered.
