'Amar Prem Ka Geet' — the song of undying love — is one of six lyrics Yashodanandan Joshi wrote for Mohan Sinha's 1945 mythological Shri Krishnarjun Yudh, set by the film's sole composer Jagannath Prakash. Beyond that credit line very little is recoverable: no catalogue consulted names a singer, no recording circulates, and no description of the picturisation survives. What can be said is that the title sits at the exact centre of the film's argument, in which an imperishable bond is pushed to the point of breaking.

With no accessible recording, nothing can honestly be claimed about this song's melody, its raag or its instrumentation, and nothing is claimed here. The one thing the surviving song list does show is range: a single ten-song assignment that runs from patriotic invocation through Gita philosophy to a floor-dance number, which is a lot of registers for a composer with no other documented body of work to draw on.

Joshi's title turns on a phrase that carries a double charge in a mythological. 'Amar prem' is the stock vocabulary of the film romance, but in a story about Krishna and Arjun the imperishable love in question is not between lovers at all — it is the bond between the human and the divine, the one relationship the epic insists cannot finally be broken however far it is tested. Joshi is a thinly documented figure whose surviving credits are scattered across the 1940s, including Vidya (1948); six of this film's ten lyrics are his.

Shri Krishnarjun Yudh was produced and directed by Mohan Sinha for his own banner, Murari Pictures, and dramatises the Puranic quarrel in which Krishna's vow to behead Chitrasen collides with Subhadra's promise to protect him, forcing Arjun to take the field against his closest friend. Prithviraj Kapoor, Shobhana Samarth, Shahu Modak, Trilok Kapoor, Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi, Menaka Devi and Rattan Bai are in the cast. Jagannath Prakash composed all ten documented songs; Yashodanandan Joshi and Safdar Aah wrote the lyrics that carry a credit.
