Synopsis

Swarg Se Sundar Desh Hamara — "our country, more beautiful than heaven" — is a Hindi social drama made in Calcutta in 1945 by Debaki Bose, the New Theatres veteran who by then had left the studio and was working on his own. The title is a statement of position rather than a description of a story, and the reference literature preserves almost nothing beyond it: no print of the film is known to survive, no synopsis appears in the standard indexes, and the film gets no more than a filmography line in the standard accounts of Bose's career. What the surviving record does establish is the shape of the production. It was a Hindi picture made with a Bengali cast — Biman Bannerjee, Kamal Mitra and Padma Devi — at the moment when Calcutta's industry was losing ground to Bombay and its directors were working in Hindi to reach a national audience. Wikipedia's HFGK-derived index of 1945 Hindi films classifies it as a Social; hindigeetmala lists six songs from it, headed by the title number and including a second patriotic title, "Desh Hamara". Who the three players portrayed and what happened to them is undocumented, and this entry does not invent it.

The Soundtrack

Six songs from the film are listed at hindigeetmala, whose 1940s film indexes follow the Hindi Film Geet Kosh: the title number "Swarg Se Sundar Desh Hamara", "Desh Hamara", "Mann Baitha Hai", "Ola Mama Maalu Re", "Rone Pe Mere Woh Hans Hans Ke" and "Tujhko Mil Jaayenge". Not one of them carries a singer or a lyricist credit in any source consulted for this entry, and no recording of any of them is in circulation — hindigeetmala's own page for each song states that no audio or video is available. The composer credit is itself disputed: Wikipedia's index of 1945 Hindi films gives the music to Debaki Bose, while Moviebuff credits Anupam Ghatak, the Bengali composer who co-scored Champa the same year. This catalogue records the first and flags the second; neither has been checked against the Geet Kosh directly. Two of the six titles — the long "Swarg Se Sundar Desh Hamara" and the short "Desh Hamara" — are patriotic and share the same words, and nothing in the record settles whether they are two songs or one song indexed twice.

The Monograph

Behind the Scenes

Bose made this film in the same year he set up his own production company. The Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema records that his independent Debaki Bose Prod. of 1945, cast with stars from the Hindi and Marathi cinemas, "paved the way for other Calcutta cineastes after the decline of New Theatres in the early 40s". The banner attached to this particular title in IMDb-derived aggregator listings is instead Indrapuri Productions, the Tollygunge studio concern; the relationship between the two has not been resolved here, and both are recorded. The players are entirely from the Bengali industry: Kamal Mitra, then two years into a career that would run to more than three hundred films and make him one of the defining character actors of Bengali cinema; Padma Devi, who had been acting since the silent era, had led J. B. H. Wadia's stunt pictures of the early 1930s and starred in Kisan Kanya (1937), India's first indigenously processed colour feature; and Biman Bannerjee, of whom the reference literature preserves little.

Significance

The film's significance is documentary rather than artistic. It marks the point in 1945 at which Debaki Bose — the first Indian director honoured at an international festival, for Seeta at Venice in 1934 — was working outside the studio system that had made him. By 1945 he had left New Theatres and set up his own production company; Wikipedia's filmography lists Swarg Se Sundar Desh Hamara and Meghdoot as the two Hindi films he released that year. The title itself is worth registering: in the last months before the INA trials, a Hindi film named after the proposition that one's own country outranks heaven sat squarely in the patriotic register Hindi cinema was turning to as independence came into view. That the film has since vanished almost entirely — six song titles, three cast names, no print, no recording — is itself representative of what happened to Calcutta's Hindi output of the 1940s.

Legacy

Almost nothing of Swarg Se Sundar Desh Hamara has survived except its paperwork. No print is known; no recording of its six songs circulates; the archival blogs that have recovered so much of 1940s Hindi film music — Atul's Song A Day, Songs of Yore — have not written about it. It survives as a filmography line under Debaki Bose's name, a row in Wikipedia's index of 1945 releases, an entry at indiancine.ma with a director and a year and nothing else, and six titles at hindigeetmala, two of them patriotic. That is the ordinary fate of the Calcutta-made Hindi films of this decade, and it is the reason a catalogue entry like this one is worth making: the record of what existed is now most of what is left of it.
