Khiladi is a 1945 Hindi feature produced by Empire Pictures of Bombay and directed by A. H. Issa, whose name is also printed A. H. Essa and A. K. Essa in different indexes. The Bombay censor board passed it on 20 March 1945 at 10,992 feet — twelve reels, a running time of 122 minutes and 8 seconds — under certificate number Bombay/31289. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh, the standard catalogue for Hindi films of the period, records its subject as a social; Wikipedia's list of 1945 releases files it under action, and for a banner whose director had previously made Flashing Sword and Pakke Badmash the two descriptions sit together easily enough. Its players are the comedy-and-stunt combination that Bombay's smaller producers relied on through the war years: the comedians Gope and Agha, the silent-era leading man E. Billimoria, the singer-actress Rajkumari, and Urmila and Sayani Atish, both of whom had already appeared in Empire's earlier pictures. No print, plot summary, publicity booklet or contemporary review of Khiladi has surfaced in any of the archives and databases consulted for this entry, so what story the film told cannot be recovered from the surviving record. What does survive is the censor line, the banner, the director and the company of players — and this page keeps exactly that, with its blanks left visible.

No music director, no lyricist and not one song is recorded for Khiladi in any source located for this entry. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh database entry for the film carries its censor certificate, banner, subject, director and full cast, but has no music-director field, no lyricist field and no song section at all — and the Geet Kosh is the reference work whose entire purpose is to list the opening line, singer, lyricist and composer of every song in every Hindi film from 1931 onward. Beyond it: hindigeetmala's 1945 film index does not carry the film; the BollySwar/MySwar album page lists the director, the production house and six actors with an empty credit block and no track list; Cinemaazi's record names only the banner, the director and four players; and neither Wikipedia's 1945 list nor indiancine.ma gives a composer. This is far more likely a gap in the documentation than a genuinely songless film — Empire Pictures' two earlier productions both carried full scores, Darpan (1941) with nine songs by Vasant Kumar Naidu, and Mere Sajan (censored as Midnight Angel, 1941) with seven songs by Vasant Kumar Naidu and Khan Mastana to lyrics by Waahid Qureshi, several of them sung by Rajkumari, who is in Khiladi's cast four years later. That pattern is suggestive, and suggestion is exactly what must not be written down as credit. HindiGeet therefore lists no songs for Khiladi at all: an empty soundtrack here is a true statement about the record, while a reconstructed one would be a false statement about the film.

Empire Pictures, Bombay was in effect A. H. Issa's own banner — the Geet Kosh records only three films under the name, and Issa directed all three. His work before it sat at the stunt and action end of the trade: Flashing Sword (1934), Zan Murid (1936), Bhedi Burka (1938), Pakke Badmash (1939), Thunder (1939) and Desh Bhakt (1940), after which came the two Empire socials of 1941 and then, four years later, Khiladi. That four-year silence between Mere Sajan (certified 7 March 1941) and Khiladi (certified 20 March 1945) covers exactly the stretch when wartime raw-stock rationing and the government's film licensing regime pressed hardest on small independent producers, and no Empire title appears in the record in between. The stock company held together across the gap: Urmila and Sayani Atish had been in both 1941 pictures, Agha and Rajkumari in Mere Sajan, and all four are back in Khiladi. At 12 reels and 122 minutes it was a slightly shorter picture than the two 1941 films, both of which ran to 14 reels and close to 150 minutes.

Khiladi matters less for what it was than for what its record shows about the shape of the 1945 industry. A substantial share of that year's Hindi output survives in the archive only as a censor line — a title, a length, a banner and a cast list — and Khiladi is a clean specimen of that undocumented majority, the films that were made, certified, released and then simply not written about. It is also a closing entry twice over: A. H. Issa had been directing since Flashing Sword (1934), and Empire Pictures, Bombay appears in the Geet Kosh with exactly three titles — Darpan (1941), Mere Sajan (1941) and Khiladi (1945) — after which neither the director nor the banner recurs. For an encyclopedia the useful work here is negative work: recording precisely what is known, naming the sources that were checked, and refusing to fill the gaps with plausible-sounding guesses.

Khiladi left no soundtrack in circulation, no print in any public collection consulted here, and no measurable afterlife. The title was reused repeatedly over the next half-century — Khiladi films were certified in 1950, 1961, 1968 and, most famously, 1992 — and those later pictures have entirely displaced the 1945 one in memory and in search results, which is the usual fate of an early film with a common title. What remains is documentary value. Kept accurately, the 1945 Khiladi marks the point at which Empire Pictures and A. H. Issa leave the record altogether, and it stands in for the several hundred films of the 1930s and 1940s that the Hindi Film Geet Kosh could catalogue but could not fill in — films that are now known by their censor certificates and their cast lists and by nothing else at all.
