The toka is the simplest yet most alive rhythm instrument to spring from Assam's bamboo culture — two tongues made by splitting a single length of bamboo above its node, which crack out a 'tok-tok' when struck together. No strings, no pitch, no stretched skin; only a concussion-born idiophone report. Amid the dhol and pepa of Bohag Bihu, and especially in the women's nocturnal Bihu, its beat — tied to a crop-protection folk belief — binds music to farming.

घन (Ghana - solid/concussion idiophones)
In the four instrument categories of the Natya Shastra (Tata, Avanaddha, Sushira, Ghana), the Toka is a 'Ghana vadya' — a solid, self-vibrating instrument that produces sound by its own body without strings or a stretched membrane. Because two bamboo tongues are struck against each other (or against the palm) to yield the 'tok-tok' report, it is specifically a concussion-type idiophone.

Description English
The toka is a simple yet lively rhythm instrument fashioned from a single piece of bamboo. A bamboo cylinder is split lengthwise just above its node into two tongues; the retained node at one end serves as a handle while the free split end cracks together when struck. Because bamboo grows abundantly in Assam's forests, the toka is cheap and available in every village.
Body
Split bamboo cylinder with two flexible tongues
Single length of mature bamboo (usually one internode with two nodes)
30-60 (varies by maker and region)
Hollow bamboo internode acts as a natural resonating cavity that sharpens the clap
Construction
The bamboo is split lengthwise into two thin, springy tongues; the split stops just above a node so the piece does not break apart and snaps back like a spring.
The intact node at one end becomes the grip held in the fist.
Craftsmen shave the edges smooth and sometimes carve decorative patterns on the bamboo.
Playing Parts
The two split tongues are the true sound source; their collision with each other or against the palm produces the 'tok-tok'.
The node end is the point of grip and control.
Frets
The toka is a rhythm instrument, not a melodic one — it has no frets, strings or pitches. Its role is to keep rhythm and produce a percussive report, not to play ragas.
Tonal Character English
The toka's sound is a sharp, dry, cracking 'tok-tok' — the natural snap of bamboo. It gives a bright, ringing rhythm that lights up the collective beat of Bihu.
Timbre
Bright, woody, percussive crack with a short natural decay
Range
Unpitched (rhythm only); pitch varies slightly with the length and thickness of the bamboo
Dynamic Range
Moderate to loud — carries well in open-air festival settings without amplification

To understand the toka, listen to a whole Bihu performance at once. First catch the deep beat of the dhol and the reedy cry of the pepa; then focus on the light, sharp 'tok-tok' floating between them — that is the toka. Notice how it fills the dhol's empty beats and drives the dance. In a mass scene, the unison shimmer of dozens of tokas is the most thrilling moment.

Margin Notes
The primary beat of Bihu music was kept by hand-clapping; that very clap led to instruments like the toka. Today the toka is counted among the eight traditional instruments of Bihu.
In the women's nocturnal Bihu the toka's steady 'tok-tok' is linked to keeping insects off the paddy fields — here music is not merely entertainment but an agricultural rite.
Across Northeast India's communities the same instrument plays under different names — Bodo 'Thorka', Hajong 'Therthera', Tripuri 'Uakhrap' — evidence of a shared bamboo culture.
In the Hajong tradition the toka is struck against the open left palm — a two-node bamboo cylinder, finely split at one end, is clapped against the palm to raise a clear crack.
Questions & Answers
