The octapad is best understood not as a classical Hindustani instrument but as the modern stage's 'rhythm magician' — an electronic percussion pad by Japan's Roland company whose eight rubber pads can be assigned any sound at all. Functionally it digitally emulates chiefly the 'avanaddha' family (membrane/percussion instruments such as dholak, tabla, mridangam) and the 'ghana' family (solid/idiophones such as manjira, ghatam). The instrument itself produces no acoustic resonance — a strike from finger or stick triggers stored sound-samples that are heard through an amplifier.

Description English
The octapad is a compact, tabletop-or-stand-mounted rectangular electronic percussion unit. Its top surface typically carries eight rubber velocity-sensitive pads — the 'eight' (octa) pads give it its name. The loudness of each strike responds to how hard the pad is hit. Inside, a sound engine stores hundreds of sampled sounds — dholak, tabla, mridangam, dhol, congas, Western drum kit and more — organised into 'kits'.
