The mahuri is a double-reed folk shawm of Odisha — the regional sister of the shehnai. A conical wooden pipe, a palm-leaf double reed and a gleaming metal bell together produce the piercing, nasal tune that marks every auspicious occasion of western Odisha. The lead melodic voice of the Gandabaja, the melodic backbone of the Ghumura and Ranapa dances, and the temple accompaniment paired with the Jodi Sankha — the mahuri is a living yet endangered tradition, still carried today by the hereditary Mahuria player-families.

(Sushira - wind instruments)
Among the four instrument classes of the Natya Shastra, the mahuri belongs to the 'Sushira' (blown / wind) category. Its sound arises from the vibration of an air column inside the bore, set in motion by the player pressing a double reed between the lips and blowing continuously.

Description English
The mahuri is a wind instrument made of wood and metal. Its main body is a conical (flaring downward) wooden pipe; a small metal staple carrying a double reed sits at the top, and a flared metal bell is fitted at the lower end to project the sound forward. In construction it resembles the shehnai but is specialised for the folk and auspicious-music traditions of Odisha.
Body
Conical wooden tube, widening from the reed end toward the bell
Seasoned hardwood (locally available tonewoods such as sheesham/blackwood), fitted with metal components
30-45 (approximate; folk builds vary by maker)
Open conical bore terminating in a metal bell that radiates and amplifies the tone
Reed
Double reed
Two thin reed blades bound together and mounted on a metal staple. The player takes this between the lips and blows; it is the source of the instrument's bright, penetrating, slightly nasal tone.
Palm-leaf or cane reed blades on a metal staple
Finger Holes
typically 7 (seven), sometimes with additional tuning holes
A row of holes along the pipe, opened and closed by the fingers to change pitch. There are no keys or frets, so gliding meend between notes is possible.
Bell
Metal bell
A flared metal cup at the lower end that gives the tone brightness and long-range projection — suited to open courtyards, processions and temple precincts.
Brass or other metal
Mouthpiece
Blowing end
A slender metal staple at the top holding the double reed; the player grips it with the lips and maintains a continuous stream of air.
Frets
The mahuri has no frets or keys — pitch is controlled by covering/uncovering finger holes and by lip pressure, allowing the meend and flexibility of folk melody.
Tonal Character English
The mahuri's tone is strident, bright and piercing — akin to the shehnai but more open and rustic. It carries far without electronic amplification across open grounds and processions, which is why it is regarded as an auspicious (mangala) instrument.
Timbre
Bright, reedy, slightly nasal with a strong upper-harmonic edge
Range
Roughly one-and-a-half to two octaves, depending on the build and player
Dynamic Range
Loud and outdoor-oriented — designed to project over drums (dhol, nisan, tamak) in the open air

To understand the mahuri, hear it at home — in a procession, wedding or temple march, where over the beat of dhol and nisan two mahuris weave layers of melody. Notice where the player breathes — in the art of continuous blowing the tune never breaks. Begin with the brisk tunes of the Gandabaja, then hear the Jodi Sankha Mahuri Baja where its auspicious solemnity unfolds.

Both the mahuri and the shehnai belong to the double-reed shawm family, but the shehnai rose to prominence in North-Indian courtly and film auspicious music, while the mahuri stayed rooted in the village-temple and folk-dance tradition of western Odisha.
Thanks to its flared metal bell and bright double reed, the mahuri carries far across open grounds, processions and temple courtyards without any microphone — which is why it is the ideal instrument for parades.
Skilled Mahuria use circular breathing — blowing from air stored in the cheeks while simultaneously inhaling through the nose — so that the melody does not break for even a moment across long dance sequences.
Questions & Answers
