The jalra is the thick bronze cymbal of South India's temples — the heavier, deeper-ringing sister of the manjira. No strings, no membrane; just two discs that clash to bind a whole bhajan congregation into one rhythm. From the Thanjavur bhajana sampradaya to Ayyappan bhajans and harinam kirtan, it is the beating timekeeper of devotional music.

घन (Ghana - solid/self-sounding instruments)
In the Ghana (solid, self-sounding) category of the Natya Shastra, jalra is a struck idiophone with neither strings nor membrane — the two bronze discs strike each other and the body itself is the sound source. The Natya Shastra classes such instruments as 'ghana vadya', where the entire body resonates.

Description English
The jalra is a pair of small, thick, heavy bronze (bell-metal) discs played to keep rhythm in South Indian temples and bhajan ensembles. Each disc has a central hole through which a cord (naada) is threaded; the player holds one in the right hand and one in the left and clashes them together. Compared with the manjira, the jalra's metal is thicker and more deeply cupped, giving it a heavier, more resonant and longer-sustaining ring.
Body
Two matching shallow-domed circular discs with a raised central boss (cup) and a small central bore
Bell metal / bronze (an alloy of copper and tin); some temple pairs are cast from panchaloha (five-metal alloy)
Diameter typically 6-10 cm per disc; thicker and heavier than manjira
No enclosed chamber — the raised central cup and thick casting act as the resonating mass, producing a sustained overtone-rich ring
Strings
Jalra is an idiophone and has no strings; sound comes purely from the metal bodies clashing
None — resonance and shimmer arise from the thick bronze itself, not from sympathetic strings
Not applicable to an idiophone
Bow
Not applicable (cord / naada)
Cotton or braided cord threaded through the central bore of each disc, sometimes knotted with a tassel; there is no bow
10-20 (short holding cord)
Held by the cord in each hand; there is no bow — the two discs are struck against each other
Tuning Pegs
Not applicable
No tuning pegs; pitch is fixed at casting by the size, thickness and alloy of the bronze
Bridge
Not applicable
No bridge; the vibrating body is the disc itself
Not applicable
Frets
The jalra has no means of changing pitch — it is a fixed-pitch rhythm instrument; the player creates expression through tempo, the force of the strike, and by damping (choking) the ring against the palm or chest.
Tonal Character English
The jalra's sound is bright, metallic and penetrating, yet the thick bronze gives it a deep, long-sustaining ring — from the sharp 'chin' of an edge strike to a shimmering, bell-like decay. In bhajan and namasankeertanam it provides the steady rhythmic anchor for congregational singing.
Timbre
Bright, ringing, overtone-rich; heavier and more sustaining than the thinner manjira, closer to a small temple bell
Range
Fixed high-register percussion pitch (a matched pair sounds one clear fundamental with a cloud of upper partials)
Dynamic Range
Wide for its size — from a soft, half-damped tap that marks subdivisions to a full open clash that carries across a temple courtyard without amplification

To appreciate the jalra, listen to an Ayyappan bhajan or a namasankeertanam. First catch its steady 'chin-chin' pulse — notice how it marks every beat. Then observe how the tempo rises toward the climax and the jalra's ring lifts the devotion to ecstasy. Listen for the difference between the open sound landing on the sam and the sharp edge-strike of the subdivisions.

The word 'jalra' is linked to the Sanskrit 'jhallari', an ancient name for a jingling idiophone. In Tamil it is often called 'talam' — the very word at the root of 'tala' (rhythm), so the instrument is, by its name, a synonym for rhythm itself.
Manjira, taal, kartal and jalra all belong to the bronze-cymbal family, but the jalra's discs are the thickest and most deeply cupped. This very thickness gives it a heavy, resonant, temple-bell-like sound that carries through a large hall or open courtyard even without amplification.
Most rhythm instruments stay in a supporting role, but in the bhajana sampradaya the jalra player is usually the lead singer (bhagavatar) himself. He sings and simultaneously holds the whole group's rhythm with the talam — this fusion of vocalist and timekeeper is the jalra's unique feature.
Questions & Answers
