Overview

The chautara is Rajasthan's four-stringed folk drone-lute — an indigenous sibling of the tanpura made of light wood and iron, strummed with a finger-worn 'nakhlo' plectrum. The Kamad community plays it for both tonic and rhythm in Baba Ramdev devotion and the Terah Tali dance; a 19th-century example is preserved at the Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal Museum, Udaipur.

तत (Tata - stringed instruments)

Physical

Description English

The chautara is a long-necked folk string instrument built from light wood and fitted with iron/steel hardware and metal strings. Its very name describes it — 'chau' (four) + 'tar' (string) — meaning a four-stringed instrument, just as ektara (one string) and dotara (two strings). In construction it resembles a tanpura, but it is smaller and built sturdier for folk use.

Body

Rounded/pear-shaped hollow wooden resonator with a long neck (tanpura-like silhouette)

Light local wood (hollowed body) with iron/steel fittings; some examples use a dried gourd (tumba) as resonator

80-110

Single hollow wooden (or gourd) chamber that amplifies the plucked drone

Strings

Four metal drone/rhythm strings that are strummed to hold the tonic and provide beat

Material: Steel wire (modern); tuned by wooden pegs
Tuning Example: Tuned to the singer's tonic (Sa) and its fifth (Pa) / octave (Sa) as a sustained drone
Tuning Hindi:

The chautara has no separate sympathetic strings — unlike the sarangi, all four strings are played (strummed) directly

All four strings function together as a drone-and-rhythm set, sustaining the tonal foundation for devotional singing

Count: 4Material: Steel

Bow

Nakhlo (iron plectrum)

The chautara is NOT bowed — it is plucked/strummed with an iron plectrum (nakhlo) worn on the forefinger

N/A (finger-worn plectrum)

The nakhlo is slipped onto the forefinger and used to strike the strings in a steady, repeating strum that maintains the drone and the beat

Tuning Pegs

Khunti

Wooden tuning pegs set into the head of the neck that tension the four strings to the singer's tonic

Bridge

Ghudach / Pul (bridge)

A flat wooden bridge (jawari-style) that gives the drone its characteristic buzzing shimmer as the strings are strummed

Wood (sometimes bone-topped)

Frets

The chautara is fretless — being a drone instrument, the strings are not stopped to change pitch; instead the open strings are repeatedly strummed.

Sound

Tonal Character English

The chautara's tone is resonant, jangling and rhythmic — a bright metallic shimmer from the steel strings that both anchors the singer's tonic and weaves a steady beat. This drone builds a meditative atmosphere in devotional singing.

Timbre

Bright, buzzing, metallic drone (jawari shimmer) with a percussive strum

Range

Fixed-drone instrument — sustains the tonic (Sa), fifth (Pa) and octave rather than playing a melodic range

Dynamic Range

Moderate — a continuous, insistent strum that carries an outdoor devotional gathering without amplification

Techniques

Description English: Strumming all four strings with the nakhlo in an even, repeating motion so a continuous tonal foundation and shimmering drone are maintained.
Usage: Backbone of every Ramdevji bhajan and the Terah Tali dance
Description English: By locking the strum tempo to the song's rhythm, the chautara supplies both drone and beat at once — this is what distinguishes it from the purely-drone tanpura.
Usage: Seated devotional performance where no separate percussionist is present
Description English: The strings' light contact against the flat wooden bridge (jawari) produces a buzzing, sustained overtone that gives the instrument its distinctive folk voice.
Usage: Sustaining atmosphere between sung lines

The Listening Guide

To appreciate the chautara, begin with a Terah Tali performance: first catch the jingle of the women's thirteen manjiras, then listen underneath for the chautara's steady, buzzing drone — that is what holds the tonic of the whole song. Notice how one instrument supplies both drone and rhythm.

Margin Notes

The chautara is a folk form of the tanpura family, but with one key difference: the tanpura only holds a drone, whereas the chautara uses that same strum to carry both drone and rhythm — which is why a devotional troupe does not strictly need a separate drum.

Depending on region and community this instrument is called chautara, tandura (tandoora), nishan and tambura. Across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab it carries different names and slight variations of form.

The name says 'chautara' (four strings), yet some accounts describe it as a five-stringed drone instrument. As a folk instrument, minor variation in string count from maker to maker and tradition to tradition is natural.

Terah Tali is among the few Rajasthani dances performed while seated. The women weave rhythm with cymbals while, behind them, the chautara-playing men remain the tonal foundation of the whole song.

Questions & Answers
