The kuzhal is the piercing-voiced double-reed instrument of Kerala's temple-melam tradition — a shrill, far-reaching cry drawn from a conical wooden body and a brass bell, rising as the single melodic voice amid the thunder of hundreds of chenda drums. In Panchari and Pandi Melam it is the 'anchor', and in its solo form 'Kuzhal Pattu' it is the soul of the deity's courtyard.

(Sushira - wind instruments)
In the Sushira (wind) category of the Natya Shastra, the kuzhal is a double-reed aerophone that produces sound by setting a column of air in vibration. Among the four Natya Shastra instrument classes (Tata, Avanaddha, Ghana, Sushira), it belongs to Sushira — the 'hollow' or 'perforated' wind instruments.

Description English
The kuzhal is a traditional Kerala double-reed wind instrument with a wooden body bored in a conical shape, ending in an affixed brass bell. It resembles a small nadaswaram or a large shehnai. The player blows through a two-bladed reed held in the mouth while both hands close and open a row of small finger-holes.
Body
Slightly conical, flared tube ending in a splayed bell
Turned hardwood (traditionally jackwood/rosewood), with a brass bell at the open end
20-35 (kurumkuzhal 'short kuzhal' is notably shorter than the Tamil nadaswaram)
Conical bore amplifies the reed's buzz into a shrill, far-carrying temple tone
Reed
जिह्वा / सीवाली (seevaali)
Double reed (seevaali)
Double reed — two thin cane blades bound together, vibrating against each other
Two thin cane blades are bound together; blowing makes them vibrate against each other to generate the tone. The kurumkuzhal ('short kuzhal') uses the same 'seevaali' reed as the Tamil Nadu nadaswaram.
Cane / reed grass, bound with thread
Bore And Bell
Conical bore drilled through the wooden body
Brass bell
The flared brass bell projects and brightens the shrill, penetrating tone so it carries over an ensemble of chenda drums.
Finger Holes
7 (typical for the shawm/oboe family)
A row of small finger-holes along the body, covered and uncovered by the fingers of both hands to change pitch.
Frets
The kuzhal has no strings or frets; it is a wind instrument. Pitch is governed by finger-hole control, breath pressure and embouchure, allowing meend-like microtonal glides between notes.
Tonal Character English
The kuzhal's tone is intensely shrill, piercing and far-carrying. This penetrating cry is its signature — even amid the thunder of dozens of chenda drums, the kuzhal's line floats above, which is why the piper serves as the 'anchor' of the melam.
Timbre
Bright, nasal, reedy and cutting — comparable to a small nadaswaram or a loud shehnai
Range
Roughly two octaves, pitched high and bright to project outdoors
Dynamic Range
Powerful and continuous — built for open-air temple festivals, not soft chamber settings; circular breathing allows unbroken sustained lines

To appreciate the kuzhal, first pick a solo 'Kuzhal Pattu' — there, without the chenda's thunder, both its sweet and its piercing capacities open up. Then hear a full Panchari Melam and notice how the kuzhal's single melodic line floats over the rising tiers (kaalams) of the tala and drives the ensemble to its climax.

In Panchari and Pandi Melam the chenda, ilathalam and kombu are all rhythmic and sonorous instruments; the kuzhal alone is melodic. So both the melody line and the cues of the vast ensemble rest on it.
The kuzhal belongs to the same double-reed shawm family as the North Indian shehnai and the Tamil Nadu nadaswaram. All three are auspicious-occasion wind instruments, but the kuzhal is smaller and shriller.
The 'kurumkuzhal' ('short kuzhal') is also called 'Kerala's short nadaswaram'; it uses the same seevaali reed as the nadaswaram, giving the two a deep kinship in tonal character.
Beyond temple festivals, in ritual performances like Theyyam and Thirayattam the kuzhal's piercing sound is played with chenda and ilathalam to invoke and welcome the deity.
Questions & Answers
