Sakal Ban (सकल बन) is the first song from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (2024) — and the debut release of his own music label, Bhansali Music. Sung by Raja Hasan and composed and arranged by Bhansali himself, the track sets a roughly 700-year-old Basant (spring) poem by the 13th–14th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusro, 'Sakal ban phool rahi sarson,' to the filmmaker's signature grand, courtesan-hall orchestration. Released as a single on 8 March 2024 (International Women's Day) with the music video following a day later, and staged at the Miss World pageant held in India in 2024, it became the most-loved song of the Heeramandi soundtrack, its official video crossing 43 million YouTube views.

Bhansali composes and arranges Sakal Ban in the lush, orchestra-and-classical-ensemble idiom that defines his films — layering tabla, sarangi, harmonium and a full string section beneath Raja Hasan's open-throated, semi-classical delivery. Rather than treat Khusro's Basant verse as a light folk tune, Bhansali builds it into a sweeping courtesan-hall showpiece: a measured tempo that swells toward grandeur, ornamented vocal phrasing rooted in the mehfil tradition, and a mix engineered for the widescreen scale of his production design. It is the sound of a traditional spring geet re-staged as cinematic spectacle.

The lyric is one of Amir Khusro's most beloved Basant compositions, written in Purbi-inflected Braj Hindi some seven centuries ago. Its surface is pure spring imagery — mustard blooming across every grove, mango buds bursting, the flame-red tesu in flower, the koyal calling from branch to branch, gardener-girls carrying bouquets. Beneath the seasonal picture runs Khusro's Sufi undertone: the bloom and the waiting are the devotee's longing for the beloved, traditionally read as his yearning for his spiritual master Nizamuddin Auliya. Because the poem is roughly 700 years old, its words are public domain; only Bhansali's 2024 setting is under copyright.

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's eight-episode Netflix drama set among the courtesans of Lahore's Heeramandi quarter in pre-Independence India, with an ensemble led by Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal; it premiered on 1 May 2024. Sakal Ban was released ahead of the series as its first single on 8 March 2024, with the music video out the next day — the launch title for Bhansali's newly founded music label, Bhansali Music. Picturized on the series' courtesans in full Basant celebration, its opulent, colour-drenched staging drew immediate comparisons to 'Deewani Mastani' from Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani. Its afterlife has reached beyond popular streaming: the recording was featured at the Royal College of Music's museum in London as part of a seminar on Sufi music and the women of South Asia, a rare instance of a mainstream 2024 film track entering an academic-heritage frame. By reviving a 700-year-old Amir Khusro Basant poem for a global Netflix audience, the song also renewed mainstream interest in Khusro's verse and the courtesan musical tradition the series dramatizes.
