The Monographजीवनी Biography

Pankaj Mullick (10 May 1905 – 19 February 1978) and Rai Chand Boral, known professionally as R. C. Boral (19 October 1903 – 25 November 1981), were the two principal music directors of New Theatres, the pioneering Calcutta studio, and frequently shared composing credit through the 1930s. Both born in Calcutta, they joined the studio in its silent-film years — Boral in 1931, initially providing live accompaniment to screenings — and together scored New Theatres' first Bengali talkie, Dena Paona (1931).
Their joint credits through the decade include Bhagyachakra (1935) and its Hindi version Dhoop Chhaon, on which they worked with director Nitin Bose and sound recordist Mukul Bose to introduce playback singing to Indian cinema for the first time — a technique that permanently changed how songs were recorded and performed on screen. They went on to co-compose music for New Theatres productions including Devdas (1935), Maya (1936), Karodpati/The Millionaire (1936), Manzil/Grihadaha (1936) and Didi/President (1937), working with singers and actors such as K. L. Saigal and Kanan Devi.
Both men were separately honoured for their contribution to Indian film music: Mullick received the Padma Shri in 1970 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1972, while Boral received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1978. Together they are remembered as the founding architects of the New Theatres sound and among the earliest professional music directors of Hindi and Bengali cinema.
