Overview

Released on August 5, 2025 — days before Krishna Janmashtami — 'Madhurashtakam' is Jubin Nautiyal's devotional offering to Lord Krishna under T-Series and Bhushan Kumar. The ancient Sanskrit ashtakam, attributed to the Vallabhacharya tradition, is here arranged and produced by Prasanna Suresh with the magical flute of Naveen Kumar at its heart. Nautiyal's warm tenor voice — usually associated with romantic Bollywood — takes on a reverential depth, moving through all eight verses of 'Adharam Madhuram' with a restrained emotion that feels both classical and contemporary. The release accompanied a short film about a boy who, after losing his mother, finds peace through devotion to Krishna, giving the ancient text a new emotional context for 2025 audiences.

The Music

Prasanna Suresh's arrangement of 'Madhurashtakam' is quietly masterful: it builds a sonic envelope that is contemporary enough to reach streaming audiences while preserving the meditative character of the original Sanskrit prayer. The production opens with the flute of Naveen Kumar — an inspired choice, since the bansuri is inseparable from Krishna's mythology — and the melodic line follows the natural cadence of the Sanskrit syllables rather than forcing them into a metered Bollywood rhythm. Jubin Nautiyal sustains his voice at a controlled mid-register, introducing very little ornamentation, allowing the meaning of each verse — each madhura attribute of Krishna — to land undistorted. The production lifts slightly at the chorus of each verse without ever becoming grandiose, a restraint that serves the devotional intent beautifully.

The Poetry

The 'Madhurashtakam' is attributed to the Vallabhacharya devotional school and follows a strict anaphoric structure: each of its eight verses ends in 'Madhuradipate Rakhila Madhuram' ('O Lord of sweetness, everything is sweet'). The genius of the composition is sensory enumeration — Krishna's lips, smile, walk, flute, heart, and clothing are each called madhura, transforming ordinary perception into an act of devotion. By singing it in 2025, Nautiyal participates in a living tradition of bhakti that has kept this text in active use for centuries.

The Story

T-Series commissioned this release as part of its annual Janmashtami devotional calendar. The music video, directed to accompany the release, tells the story of a young boy who loses his mother and finds solace in devotion to Krishna — giving the ancient Sanskrit text a fresh emotional narrative for a contemporary Indian audience. The choice of Jubin Nautiyal was deliberate: his fan base, built largely on romantic Bollywood songs, gave the devotional track instant reach well beyond the traditional bhajan-listener demographic.

The Legacy
